When QR codes? I just got back from china and that shit is amazing. No need for crazy nfc stuff or special device… Phone and you’re done. Some shops didn’t even have registers… Just a phone.

They didn’t even have visa or MasterCard terminals plugged in.

I set it up for a friend yesterday and we exchanged a Euro back and forth so he got the 5 € welcome bonus. Seems to be a good incentive to get people on board. Hope my main bank implements it this year.

i’m a bit disappointed in wero: they want to be a european alternative, but you can only use it on devices with an operating system controlled by us companies.

i don’t understand why they can not make it work in a browser? what are the technical limitations?

I fail to see how Wero would be practical for paying in a store. Using a card is faster, and if you use your phone to pay, you might as well use NFC.

and how do you pay with NFC? AFAIK that only works with Google Pay / Apple Pay.

Yes, some banks. But as Wero is a european project that aims to build financial infrastructure independent of US tech, I would’ve liked to see such a feature (if it requires an app on a mobile phone anyway). This would make contactless payment without Google feasible for everyone (and terminal providers would only have to implement one new protocol instead of handling each bank’s custom NFC stuff)

        webstores.

I can’t use it on amazon, or to buy a plane or train ticket. Can’t use it to pay for a pizza I order online, or a movie ticket, or a digital download movie or song or album.

I also don’t use cards or phone payment IRL if I can avoid it. But particularly online, where I HAVE to use VISA or paypal, they’re also not supporting those either.

I would love to accept it in my store, but my terminal provider just said they wouldn’t implement it.

Your comment just made me look it up again and with payone there now seems to be a German provider that supports it. Guess I consider changing to them at the end of my current contract, they cost about the same as my current one.

I mean, I’m mostly meme’ing, I will never touch it. I think it’s hilarious that they do all that marketing and it’s simply not functional yet.

I do sincerely wish you good luck and that it works for you though.

          Yea true.

Personally, my biggest issue with it is that it’s tying one bank account and one phone number (at least with my bank, I’ve heard that other banks tie it to email addresses).
I have multiple bank accounts (one for each business plus personal ones), but only one mobile phone number. So I can only get and send wero payments with just one bank account. I cannot get/send business and personal payments simultaneously, and even if I activated it for one business, it still wouldn’t work for the other.
I could only get more phone numbers, but they cost monthly, and I’m not willing to do that just for a niche payment service.

I’m still feeling positive that they even work on alternatives. But you’re absolutely right, it isn’t really functional right now and money should be put into development rather than marketing/user growth for now.

I’m just going to keep on using SEPA CT. It’s more convenient for me. In fact it’s superior to wero in many ways, it’s European, and all EU banks support it AFAIK

tying it to phone number is no biggie, look at UPI, they’ve been doing it since inception

Well when a phone number can only be used for one bank account, but someone has more bank accounts than phone numbers (which is the case for a lot of people) then it is an issue because they can’t use wero with all accounts.

The list of banks that let you use wero is also pretty limited as of now, so it has a long way to go before being truly useful :(

There is some momentum right now for sure. But the tracker is tracking what? Some selection of shops? Common two digit numbers of shops? Over all Europe.? Are they kidding.

        But still a nice project

I think governments should just release a privacy respecting token that can be transferred physically between parties without the need for facilitation or interference by any third party. Preferably, the tokens should be tied to a shared unit of account, backed by the government(s), so that a user could easily exchange tokens for digitally managed receivables with a trusted independent service provider that is responsible for security. This way, the user does not have to carry all their holdings in physical tokens but can still readily use it for ad hoc payments to other users in proximity.

A release ready MVP should include functionality such as different denominations of tokens and established ways of printing and distributing the tokens with strong safefuards against known threat actors. The tokens should have an intuitive UX so that it is easy to tell the value represented by each version of the physical token on offer. Token management in user space could be simplified by “wallets” (provided by third parties). Developers should consider a “make it rain” mode for initial beta, to attract interest to the project.

I propose this new innovation be called monke, or the return to money.

GNU Taler is basically that. it is however exclusively for customer to merchant transactions, not user to user, to prevent money laundering.

I haven’t been able to successfully pay with it. It’s a terrible replacement for PayPal. That works with every bank and credit card. I have two bank accounts and one credit card linked to PayPal.

    Wero is an inconvenient failure.

Do you work for PayPal or something? As of 09.2025 Wero processes 100M person-to-person transactions. That’s quite a number for an inconvenient failure.
