But as Wero is a european project that aims to build financial infrastructure independent of US tech, I would’ve liked to see such a feature (if it requires an app on a mobile phone anyway). This would make contactless payment without Google feasible for everyone (and terminal providers would only have to implement one new protocol instead of handling each bank’s custom NFC stuff)

Bank apps don’t implement anything custom. They act like a real card.
