Wisconsin Republicans made a last-ditch effort Tuesday to avoid having the liberal-controlled state Supreme Court put in place new legislative district boundaries for the November election.

The Republican-controlled Senate passed new Senate and Assembly maps just over an hour after unveiling them, not giving the public or Democrats a chance to review them ahead of their release. Democrats said they didn’t have time to analyze the proposal before the vote.

And Assembly Republicans were discussing passing maps as proposed by Democratic Gov. Tony Evers without any changes. That could stop the Wisconsin Supreme Court from ordering maps that were even worse for Republicans.

IDK what the hell is going on in the middle of the country, honestly.

I am a connoisseur of police bodycam videos on Youtube, and there’s a distinct difference to the flavor of the crimes and the behavior of the cops and citizens in different regions of the country. For me it’s a fascinating little cultural study. Boston, the crimes at issue are generally real crimes and both the cops and the criminals are simply unfazed while going through the whole process. Florida, the crimes basically boil down to someone being wild and unreasonable, with the cops again taking a fairly unfazed demeanor about whatever wild shit is on their plate for the day. In California the cops often seem just kind of poorly-trained and out of their depth.

In Wisconsin and Ohio it’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. The people who are being arrested will do weird and pointless stuff. They’ll steal a car for no reason, refuse to pull over, scream at the police, and then start crying in the back of the patrol car. They’ll hide in a shed and pretend they’re not there when the police are clearly surrounding the shed and trying to talk with them. They’ll call 911 and tell the dispatcher to send new police because the ones they’re talking to are being unreasonable. It’s like there’s some kind of fundamental disconnect that prevents them from understanding the situation they’re in. I honestly have no idea what cultural factors are responsible for it, but it’s incredibly weird and markedly different from most of the rest of the country.
