Recently I finished my switch from memorized and re-used passwords to KeePassXC and KeePassDX based on recommendation of other Lemmy users, and I like the workflow.

In a similar fashion, I also recently purchased a domain name, and set-up paid e-mail account(s) at Purelymail with that domain.
I use Thunderbird on desktop and phone for now.

It’s OK-ish on desktop, but the phone experience is poor.
On desktop, during set-up it requires filling fields such as “Full name” to continue, which can even be deleted later. Thankfully, there is some advanced option to skip guided setup after this.

On a phone, the name field is equally mandatory, only to then be flagged as “Optional” in settings after setup.
It also requires BOTH IMAP and SMTP. Not only that, it verifies that the SMTP server is valid and the user can be authenticated (I didn’t try without IMAP).
Trying to load that account via export from desktop shows an “invalid data” error.
Furhtemore, I can’t receive e-mail notifications.
I have them enabled, I allowed necessary permissions, there is a permanent notification stating it works, RethinkDNS shows active connection to the IMAP server, when I open the app, the e-mail is immediately there.

on Thunderbird for Android the push connection and the new mail alerts are separate settings, which catches a lot of people. check Manage folders > Inbox and make sure both Enable Push and Notifications are on, then Settings > your account > Notifications > New mail notifications. if it still only turns up when you open the app, set its battery usage to Unrestricted, and on Android 13+ allow “Alarms & reminders” for it (that’s in the app’s system settings, not under permissions). FairEmail is worth a try too if you get fed up with it.

iPhone’s built-in mail client and Thunderbird on desktop technically, though in reality I normally use webmail.

I haven’t found a single client for Linux that I like, they’re all shit really. I don’t know why they find it so difficult. They all try to inundate you with features and overcomplicate it. I mean, don’t clutter my screen up with shit and just show me my fucking emails. Why’s it so hard? I want something like the Windows 10 email client but I want it on Linux. One side of the window should list my emails, and in a larger pane it should show the email content. I want a pop up to give me a small preview of the email when I get a new one and if I have clicked it in a few seconds it should fuck off. Simple.

Selfhosted mail for the past 25+ years. For clients I use mutt with offlineimap on the desktop, K9 on my phone, and, Apple Mail on my iPad. I don’t love Apple Mail, but the available alternatives all seem much worse.

I didn’t know they had an email client. Makes sense though, they have their own version of pretty much everything else.

The last place I worked used Thunderbird, so when I went to my current job and they used standard Gmail, I immediately downloaded Thunderbird.

On my phone, I just use the default Gmail app. It’s not nearly as painful as the website.
