“This is truly a decisive moment,” Biden said. “Israel has made their proposal. Hamas says it wants a cease-fire. This deal is an opportunity to prove whether they really mean it.” What Biden didn’t say was that Israel also needed to prove that they meant it.
That’s because Israel doesn’t need to prove anything. They know if they fail the terms or negotiate in bad faith that they’ll lose their purse. Biden reinstated the law Trump repealed on Israeli settlement on Palestinian territory, so expansion is off the table. Why do you think the rest of Netanyahu’s cabinet is furious?
Signing up to keep Biden in direct oversight removes the State Department from the equation. We’d finally see how Biden handles the conflict in a position of direct control, without following advisement from Congress or the State Department.
Netanyahu’s cabinet is pissed because the far right coalition believes that there can not be peaceful living with arabs or Muslims. Ben-Gvir has stated outright that Palestinians don’t deserve to live. Nearly every time a ceasefire is broken, it’s by Israel. Every time the IDF “starts an investigation”, it falls into the void and never gets concluded. Israel has a lot to prove.
Of course they do. That’s not what i’m getting at.
I’m saying that Biden has a Congress that legislated support for Israel, and a State Department that’s providing compromised intelligence of violations. If he’s in direct oversight of negotiations, and Israel breaches the agreement, he can amend existing munitions agreements against legislative support and intelligence.
As of now, he’s held back by both Congress and the State Department. Republicans in Congress will try to impeach him for going against all available governmental recommendations if he amends agreements without conclusive findings from the State Department.
If he doesn’t do the right thing while directly overseeing negotiations, then we’ll know where he stands on his own.
They have a case if he goes against Congress and intelligence. They don’t if Netanyahu breaches a ceasefire agreement or negotiates in bad faith. In trial, POTUS can’t substantiate a decision based on intelligence outside of the State Department or recorded first-hand experiences. The ICC and the UN are not considered applicable intelligence if their findings are not included in the State Department report.
Biden reinstated the law against Israeli settlements that Trump repealed, so expansion is off the table. Israel can only negotiate for hostage return and ceasing inbound attacks. That’s why Israel’s far-right wants to avoid documented negotiations.
Whether there is a law against settlements is irrelevant. Every Israeli government expands settlements, they’re not going to stop because they know the US will always support them.
Netanyahu in particular is not constrained by the idea of the rule of law.

If you think Biden will ever cut off Netanyahu or the IDF I think you’ve got a lot of disappointment in your future.

Republicans will try to impeach him regardless, that’s kind of irrelevant.

He may not be, but ceasefire agreements are exactly that.
Biden has taken more money from Israel than any current member of Congress.
