In October, fully electric cars took 37 percent of the new-car market: 94,086 of them, more than petrol and diesel cars combined for the second month in a row. Less than three years after the old subsidy was scrapped overnight and sales collapsed, the birthplace of the automobile is buying electric faster than its own car industry predicted!

…

Germany’s best-selling electric car in October was Tesla’s Model Y as it outsold the Volkswagen Golf, Germany’s best-selling car every year since 1981.

The catch is Tesla’s rhythm. Its German registrations swing with the delivery quarter, so the Model Y went from 299 in July to 8,038 in September, and the Tesla brand as a whole registered just 2,932 cars in October.

Over the full year sits second, outsold by Czech automobile manufacturer Skoda’s Elroq that registered more than 3,000 cars in every month of 2026 through September and leads the year to date with 30,845, ahead of the Model Y.

…

The top-10 brands in Germany according to the latest registration come exclusively from domestic brands: Volkswagen, Mercedes, and BMW.

This base fee system is stupid af and should be made illegal. Charging stations should work like a petrol station, you charge, you tap your card (idc if its before or afterwards) and everyone pays the same. And at least with charging stations interday fluctuations can make sense.

I wouldn’t say this should be illegal. What should be illegal is the huge difference between ad-hoc charging, registered, roamed and subscribed charging.

Could be that subscribed charging costs 0,35€, registered 0,45€, ad-hoc 0,49€ and roaming 0,78€ for some reason. A spread of 50% would be acceptable but not 222%.

But why? The subscription is only to force a vendor lock in and spy on me, it serves no purpose but to extract more value from me while simultaneously bothering me. There is no reason to allow such a system.

Good point. It allows lower prices and load distribution, e.g. how Tesla does it.

Maybe we could regulate it so that the roaming and ad-hoc price mustn’t be different and mustn’t be more than 150% of what the cheapest non-flatrate charging tariff would be?
