“This is a UNIX system, we leant about this in school!”
Such a classic line which I couldn’t imagine Hollywood coming out with now. I believe the GUI they use is a real one from the early 90s as opposed to CGI from the special effects team.

Never considered the “voters are stupid and greedy” angle… but they are so you might be right here.
The main argument against NIT which I’d always heard was that you were losing the savings on administration that UBI has. In theory with UBI you can get rid of all disabilities and public pensions beaurocracy and means-testing since everyone gets the same lump sum.
NIT has some form of means-testing since you need to catalog who earns what to find those in need.
Will certainly come in useful if you end up in a Jurassic Park type situation!
This is the 80th comment and no one has said “drugs” (unless you count alcohol). Maybe drug addicts have better things to do with their time than browse lemmy!
I am a moderate supporter of UBI. Strongly support “negative income taxing” which is a bit more techy but essentially your income is topped up if it falls below a certain level as opposed to everyone getting a lump sum each month whether they need it or not.
The fact your country resolves every single problem with violence is astonishing. Lemmy has been a cesspool the past few days. You guys deserve Trump - he’s pretty much a personification of the entire country.
Won’t rank rhem all but Jackie Brown is definitely underrated. OUATIH might be my favourite film of his.
I think True Romance is an honourary Tarantino film too since he wrote the script for it and you can see his fingerprints everywhere when you watch it.
Yeah it’s a bit of a foible but I won’t crack a joke unless it’s already got me laughing internally.
Yeah it’s not irrational to believe that things can always get worse
Yeah that could happen but we were all predicting total collapse last time and things were mostly just bad as opposed to apocalyptic. Obviously the insurrection is unforgivable but the dude spends most of his time playing golf.
It would be awful if the USA elected someone who was the same amount of evil but actually competent. Like president Xi in China type of person.
The system is extremely flawed but works just well enough for a plurality of people to feel like they are getting something out of it. I think it would need to collapse in such a way as to affect more people if there was a chance it would be replaced
Got no love for the dude. Clearly wasn’t a boyscout. Also have to admit it was a slick assassination given that they are still at large.
I just feel celebrating it (encouraging it?) is immoral Nihilism might seem appealing but it’s basically just giving up.
Two wrongs don’t make a right I’m afraid.
Edti: Like you don’t exactly need to be Kamt to see that setting a precedent for extra-judicial killings isn’t going to end well.
You’re a savage pretending to have morals
Just to expand, even if you don’t watch Star Trek, asking if they think “Deep Space 9” is worth watching will yield you hours of socialising.
I’ve not had to deploy this technique for a while because eventually I watched Star Trek and loved it. Now I’m one of those people lol.
It’s like a secret dialect to unlocking conversation with people who are nerdy and struggle to maintain a conversation. Once you are aware that the IT guy/gal you are talking to has seen Star Trek then you don’t need to reach any further for other conversation topics.
Makes sense to me
French politics is always on the brink and the French public are almost always protesting. I’m not sure their revolution ever really stopped.
I slip on my fingerless hacker gloves, open my terminal emulator and give it the pipe |
I had a job at the time that let me WFH maybe once every 2-3 weeks and I thought it was crazy generous lol.
Now I’m home virtually every day.
