Technology@lemmy.world•Report: Google and SpaceX in talks to put data centers into orbitEnglish
2·2 days agoRadiative IR cooling is still orders of magnitude less efficient than convective cooling. There is precisely zero percent chance that orbital data centers will be less expensive than terrestrial ones.

61·5 days agoThis has been an extremely obvious flaw in the modlog concept from the very start, and has been discussed on and off for years. IMO, it exposes a much wider issue with federated forums as currently implemented, despite the aggressive defense of some vague concept of “openness.”
Blindly casting every user and mod action out into the universe in plaintext with no recall mechanism is problematic, and it will only get more problematic as the technical prowess of the average user drops. Doxxing is just the tip of the iceberg here, and I don’t think most people appreciate just how massive the social engineering attack surface actually is. Rogue instances could silently build engagement profiles on users, and then actually serve them targeted malicious content. This could be widespread, and almost impossible to detect.

Technology@lemmy.world•New ‘Jesus-centric’ Christian phone network will block pornography and LGBT contentEnglish
6·11 days agoWhich is precisely why this will fail. Christians don’t actually believe anything they preach. They just want to be seen as pious, and a phone carrier doesn’t give them a visible virtue signal.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does Lemmy.ML admire authoritarian regimes ?English
12·12 days agoThe same thing that anti fuedalism and anti monarchy looks like. Building a better system in the face of global opposition to the movement. The Soviet Union failed miserably at this, so defending that system is absurd. China is doing better, but needs to demonstrate that it can escape its authoritarian past, and also not fall into its own cycle of imperialism.
I personally do believe China can do this, and it will take some time, like it took some time for the US to and Europe to converge on liberal democracy. However I think China needs to face some uncomfortable truths on the journey. Xi is a step backwards from Hu and Deng. But Nixon was step backwards from Kennedy. Trump is a huge fucking step backwards from Obama. They’ll get there, no matter what the US does, in the same way liberalism got there despite the last throws of monarchy standing against it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why does Lemmy.ML admire authoritarian regimes ?English
29·12 days agoThe problem is that “critical support” effectively boils down to affirmative defense for being a hypocrite, and the entire framework has literally nothing to do with any particular economic system or theory of statecraft. It’s literally just being mad about the cold war in a very weird way which insulates them from self reflection. It’s the exact baggage which keeps leftist ideas marginalized in most of the world.
It’s no accident that .ml is banned in China. Even the world’s most ostensibly successful socialist state understands that this tankie extremism is not helpful.

2·16 days agoIt’s likely the cloud backups they can read. Encrypted archives are hard to sync across devices while still keeping the same level of security. I always advise against it if you don’t have a good reason to do it.
It’s also all but confirmed that they use on-device keyword recognition for targeted advertising. So if the app can phone home for some keywords, then it can phone home for anything.
This is the way. For basic residential shit, basic protection and one hand rule is fine.
How minor? You can do basic stuff on hot circuits if you are careful. Put on some rubber gloves under your work gloves and you’ll be fine.
