You live in canada, so buy something with both 4wd / 2wd. Having 2wd for the summer will save you gas money, and having 4wd means its safer to drive in snow (regarding safety from your vehicle and not others).

Make sure to check the oil dip stick and transmission dip stick too. And if the car is already when you get there turn it off first thing and just look through car.

Another thing I would recommend is to be familiar with the systems in your house, what fuel does your furnace use? What type of water heater do you have? how old are the fuses in the fuse box? Does your electrical panel have a surge protector? Do you have a water pump should your basement begin to flood? Do you have a generator panel? Knowing how these work can save you money on trouble shooting.
For example, if you live in an area with lots of squirrels, it might be worth putting up chicken wire on any entrance to the attic from the outdoors. Ex: air vents. If I would have done this, I would have saved $900 from chewed wires that could have started a fire.

They make phones with external antennas, but those are a few thousand dollars, but even a small screw on SMA antenna could extend the range of your phone by a few extra miles / kilometers depending on where you live.
Only if there were affordable options that existed.

According to your logic, a 2wd w/ snow tires will be a 4wd w/ snow tires AND even with a locking rear diff. Have you ever been off roading or gone up a icy slope in the winter?
