  • Yeah they deleted an acct of mine for inactivity, then when I replaced it they flagged the new one for manual review saying “this addr cannot send/receive emails until it is cleared, please email us at [support acct] using [the very acct that cannot send mail, ffs].” Like dude how can I email you from the email on your servers that you have blocked from sending email? How does that make sense to you?

Anyway I made a Disroot acct which is better for me because IMAP support. They flagged me for review too, but then approved TWO different emails without all that horse shit from Tuta. Their sign up site can be a bit confusing (in particular their “human check” just says “weak password” unless you hit the character count so just max that out, but as a result of this confusion I’m using a 64char long randomly generated pass so, yay) but other than that they’ve been great so far.

  • That’s all well and good but the prosecution in your case, and there will be a case, is definitely going to use the fact that you were shooting irresponsibly against you.

First of all as has been previously noted by another user, it has been used successfully to “prove” that the defendant didn’t fear for their life and as a result people who were just defending themselves have wound up in prison for a long time.

Second, “aim for grazing shots” is dangerous, and is more likely to injure a bystander than putting an appropriate hollow point bullet into the thickest part of an attacker, center mass, where the bullet is more likely to be contained rather than exit (and if it exits, it will have dumped most of the kenetic energy into the target and broken up a bit, thus still safer.) Literally all training classes teach you to aim for center mass because of this, and the fact that you’re more likely to actually hit than miss entirely, which is pretty important. Like Mel Gibson says in The Patriot when he and his kids ambush the british, “Aim small, miss small.” It’s a movie, but it’s no less true, “chest bigger than head, hit to chest better than missing head.” (In this case, “head” would be “graze,” but that advice is so untethered from reality I’m not used to it, most people you have to tell this to are aiming for heads or feet, which it also applies to, so I’m used to instructing them rather than grazers.)

I suggest you take a bare minimum defensive pistol/rifle class before giving advice designed to get people killed or imprisoned, they can be very informative.

For anyone else reading his advice: PLEASE do not listen to that, look up the laws in your specific area and take basic safety and basic defensive courses, and practice until you have muscle memory.

  • It’s actually the opposite, TBirdMobile is a fork of K9 (and it’s basically just reskinned blue for now lol), they currently have feature parity but at some point (supposedly already, but I guess they delayed it because K9 got an update a couple months ago) K9 is set to stop receiving updates as they fully switch over to TBird.

I also love K9, been using it since ~2012.

At least for now, it is just blue K9, but so help me if Mozilla hurts my sweet app I’m gonna throw a fit lol.

  • Another bump for antennapod, haven’t found a better podcast app yet and I have tried a few just to see.

Also Delta Chat, I have recently been trying it out through the Arcane Chat app (same dev, Arcane seems to be his feature testing grounds) and I love it so far. It’s easy enough to use I was able to get my mom on it, can’t say that for XMPP or Matrix! I’m sure it’s got its own problems, no forward secrecy, metadata (which to my knowledge every messaging app has by virtue of how “messages” work, even snail mail, it has to know who to go to), but then again Delta wasn’t started as an Amdocs (mossad associated company that infiltrated US telcom) product like the Matrix Foundation, so I trust it more for now. And Delta/Arcane uses so much less battery than Conversations does when running GrapheneOS, like by a LOT. I just checked, Conversations has eaten 20% of my charge since full, Arcane Chat has used less than 1% despite having the same screen/background times and same number of messages sent/received on both.

  • I’d try and get my work to switch, but apparently Zebra thermal printers (of which we have so many) don’t work well with CUPS, you may be able to do some weird shit to make them work but iirc it wasn’t too viable for a large scale operation.

I’d wager a lot of companies do use things that just don’t work too well on linux yet, not that they couldn’t work it’s just that none of the people smarter than me who make linux happen have worked on it yet, and until they do it’s just what it is. Before we want to capture the enterprise market we need good easy to use thermal printing software, CNC software, laser etching software, stuff like that. It can be done too for at least most things I’m sure.

  • I can’t speak for them, but personally I’ve been moving away from matrix entirely for a few reasons.

Element was always a buggy mess on my phone, and a shitty electron app on my laptop.

It was too difficult for normals and while I disagree, they wouldn’t use it. What’s a chat app without contacts after all?

While element was bugging and I was awaiting an update, I found out that the Matrix [.] org foundation was started as a project at Amdocs, then when it was defunded the lead of the project created the foundation. Amdocs is fucking sketchy, they’re associated with mossad and have infiltrated the US telcom networks. Now look, I’m not saying they backdoored matrix, but they did do the other thing and backdooring a chat app would be right in line with their entire schtick, and I’m just too fucking paranoid for that, straight up. It also leaks metadata like piss to any server that federates with yours so if mossad is working with the matrix org, they get all of it just by your server federating with the largest, “official” server. To some degree, metadata seems inescapable, but almost anyone is better than mossad.

They also have a bit of a CP problem in their public rooms so stay out of those, but don’t worry due to that problem they removed searching for public rooms so you have to know the addr to join, so they make it hard to stumble into them, but also now you can’t search for public rooms which is a hinderance if you did want to join, say, the rasberry pi room, despite the risk of cp being posted.

BUT they don’t require phone numbers!

So for now I’m trying out Delta Chat, seems alright so far. No video calling though.

But yeah maybe that whole Amdocs connection to the “official server” is what they were referencing, but if not I’d like to know their reason!

  • Yeah I’m sure I would do the full build, but also I’m definitely a weirdo and there’s no way any of the shit I use comes stock lol so it has been mainly the “additional software” and dependencies bit, and to be honest I had no clue how you guys did it but this post helped a lot, thanks!

I’m still kind of a linux noob is also the thing, I started my journey years ago, but only by booting into tails every so often, then eventually ~4y ago I installed Fedora, eventually got tired of gnome and when the framework 16s dropped I grabbed one and switched to FedoraKDE, and that’s it, I haven’t made the jump to a big boy distro that “isn’t recommended for beginners” but Slackware will be the one I try, because I was a SubGenius before I even installed linux.
