It’s not actually that weird, religion has traditionally been used as a tool for social cohesion. If religion is abandoned without a new unifying ideology to replace it then society starts to become atomized the way we see happening in the west. I would argue that in communist states, the ideology fills the role of religion and unifies society towards a common goal.
