  • I’ve had a couple close calls and while that puts urgency and importance in perspective it did shit for anxiety or existential dread about death. I think there’ll always be something else I want to do or time I want to spend with, but for emotionally preparing for death I think the 3 biggest positive effects have been deconstructing from my childhood indoctrinated belief in a utopia afterlife, an epic dose of shrooms in my 20s that helped with death anxiety and just anxiety in general, and grieving over the death of friends and family and understanding the process of death better by being there for someone as they experienced their last weeks.

  • I’ll speak to the humans have value part, but just briefly saying someone diagnosed with depression is just being lazy is bigoted against people with serious mental health diagnosis and is the same & just as gross as saying someone diagnosed with a physical condition like cancer is lazy.

He argued for universal human rights based on our inherent agency. The argument is laid out better elsewhere, but a short version is something like this:

    1. We humans have agency, that is desires & goals to accomplish. For a child it can be as basic as I’m hungry -> eat food, but this is something that gives us normative structure (you should do a thing). For example if I have the goal of graduating from school I should attend classes, I should do homework, etc.

    2. Every goal you wish to accomplish can have different requirements, but two that are always present are the freedom to pursue your goals and the wellbeing to accomplish tasks necessary to achieve your goals. So you would need the right to freedom and wellbeing to pursue and achieve your goals.

    3. Because your agency gives you the right to freedom and wellbeing to pursue and accomplish your goals, then everyone’s agency grants them the same rights.

If you accept the 3 items above then violate other people’s freedom and wellbeing then you would be objectively wrong and inconsistent in your beliefs, because you believe you have rights by agency but deny those same rights to others by the same reason (agency) they hold.

  • This is coming from someone who is pretending to think Microsoft is currently doing well and could lose some quality at the expense to introduce new features users want faster to sell an image of technology innovators or at a baseline a user friendly experience

What is actually happening is they are trying really hard to sell Microsoft after windows 11 launch pushed a lot of users away or at least gave them an accurate impression of how MS caters to corporations and advertisers and they don’t give a shit about users as long as they keep buying computers with windows monopoly pre installed. The ‘ai is going to be good enough to replace developers’ longshot could come in 10 years or 10,000 years and is a hand wave to not understand the problem or currently available possible solutions.

Also the interview only covers corpo interests and doesn’t include any labor or software union leaders.

  • Every social media platform I’ve used in the past started out pretty similar then capitalists and advertisers shat all over it and refuse to moderate authoritarians like fascists and nazis because they have money while at the same time censoring violence against authoritarians and genocide footage requires a login to keep track of who is trying to educate themselves so I left.

If something similar happens here subsets of instances can stay federated with each other so hopefully it won’t be a complete wash & require a new platform but we’ll see. I’m still on the fence about a permanent history and not dumping out instance histories periodically or a rolling max archive say 5 years back, but anonymity I think pushes me further to the archive everything side.
