Yep I agree, it’s very frustrating because I feel like I’m getting the same “media” politics on lemmy as you’d get from mainstream news. I think you kinda just have to find a trustworthy expert that was interviewed and look at their analysis.

There is no class interest that makes Republicans vote to ban Muslim immigrants, that’s a reactionary position based on propaganda and fearmongering. Not everything would be solved with critical thinking because people would still vote for their own interests, but it would stop people voting directly against their own interests and also harming others because of their racism and homo/transphobia.
People in general are not well-informed rational actors. Intelligence does not equal critical thinking, which is why you’ll see doctors saying climate change is fake. I am stupid and so is the working class and so is everyone else when they are first born. I was just taught many times over not to be a reactionary and take my time to learn something before having an opinion on it. It’s not their fault they weren’t taught (or had lead poisoning in the 60s) but they’re still not using critical thinking.
It’s much easier to make a bill that says “we cut research funding to tax billionaires less” and get your cult members to vote for it than it is to make a comprehensive healthcare bill without loopholes that may have to rework an entire industry, while having a thin majority.
From the 117th congress wiki:
Despite Democrats holding thin majorities in both chambers during a period of intense political polarization, the 117th Congress oversaw the passage of numerous significant bills,[3][4] including the Inflation Reduction Act, American Rescue Plan Act, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Postal Service Reform Act, Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, CHIPS and Science Act, Honoring Our PACT Act, Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act, and Respect for Marriage Act.[4]
Do-nothing democrats is a lie spread by conservative media, their job is just significantly harder, and they don’t have a propagandized cult behind them.
People generally are reactionaries without long term thinking, you have to teach that out of them. For your example, emotional intelligence and education are both strong predictors of voting D vs R. Long-term thinking is not our baseline, because that generally wasn’t useful for millions of years of evolution.
People generally think, but are not rational actors unless educated, otherwise you wouldn’t see trump be so popular among Mexican and black men, and advertising/propaganda wouldn’t exist. Humans are not rational actors working from outside the realm of animals, we are one step removed from monkeys. We ARE capable of long-term critical thinking, but it takes more energy so by default we don’t use it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•To all the men here, are y'all satisfied with the male friendships y'all have in life?
6·1 month agoHard disagree, I’ve met some super nice people who have 0 friends because they’re just shy and awkward or have anxiety, or are just plain weird. You can’t expect those people to be open and sociable when they hardly ever talk to people. Add on to that you have to make a huge effort to meet new people when you’re an adult, things being so online, loss of 3rd spaces, and that covid socially stunted so many people.

2·1 month agoIt’s kinda even worse than that, it’s very close to just being a cult, they will give up almost all their values because the things they’ve blocked out that they’d have to face (everything really IS that bad, climate change is real, the immigrants I’m targeting are humans like me) is just too high a cost.

4·1 month agoI personally know many trump voters and almost all are legitimately racist and do not care what happens to illegals, so long as it’s not in their immediate circle. Go look at polls of Republicans, they care about people in their family and friends, past that they don’t care. This person would not have cared even a little if it wasn’t their family member, and most likely would’ve had nothing to say. The fact that they were lied to about “immigrants taking their jobs” doesn’t make them caring so little about their fellow man any less reprehensible.

21·1 month agoYes which is why I’m not against ai as a whole, just in its current form it needs massive regulations. I would still not be happy about how it’s ruined huge portions of the internet, but I would probably put up with that for the value it provides.

102·1 month agoSure not all the critique is accurate, but in its current form, it causes huge issues with water and noise pollution in places the data centers are built, and are sucking unbelievable amounts of power, while essentially DDOSing tons of sites to scrape data, and often using copyrighted material that they have no license for. It is also reducing people’s ability to think critically because people turn to it immediately.
I’m not an idiot who will say it’s not useful, but we need to slow down by about 20x with what we’re doing with it now, and save it mainly for medical usage until we have a solution to those massive problems.

1·1 month ago? Did you read the conclusion, which is what the researchers believe you should take from these findings? I picked some random paper because this is well established that they have negative effects
The excessive consumption of these beverages does indeed pose a threat to health, as it impacts many organs and systems.
Some of the risks are listed as follows: mental health (including incidental mood disorders such as depression and eating disorders such as bulimia); delays in child neurodevelopment when consumed by mothers during pregnancy; cardiac remodeling (increased LAD and LVM); evidence of worsening retinopathy as well as increased HbA1c in diabetics; increased urinary symptoms in women; incidental ESRD, a modest association between consumption of ASB and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma as well as multiple myeloma in men, incidental rheumatoid arthritis in women; increased risk of hip fractures in postmenopausal women; incidental dental erosion and caries; and finally, increases in BrAC when used in alcoholic beverages.

People take it for granted but it’s actually such a cool bit of engineering, we had a world-changing technology, but it would take decades to get lines set up and wouldn’t really be too useful until then. But engineers realized by literally playing and listening to beeps over an existing widespread utility in phone lines, you’ve just given almost everyone access to the internet overnight, with almost 0 infrastructure cost.

1·2 months agoYou have to live in reality idk what to say, if black people commit more crime in an area I want to have that information so I can figure out why so I can prevent it (outreach programs specifically targeted at black kids for instance), if you say it as a dogwhistle to other racists that’s a different story.
I think genZ is absolutely cooked for different reasons (AI, social media, tiktok, covid lockdowns during a critical part of development) and I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re also an at-risk group to scams.
If your goal is to dogwhisle or denigrate based on identity then yes that’s wrong, but old people are the majority of the voting block and they majority voted for Trump. Saying “old people are racist and closed-minded” is false. Saying “old people are NOT racist and closed-minded” is even more false.
