“There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.” - Mark Twain

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think about a political system fundamentally built around the scientific method with the primary goal of optimizing the HDI, GDPPP, and environmental impact?English
7·6 days agoOh that is already being done its just that human wellbeing isn’t the goal and the process of efficient management isn’t public facing

14·6 days agoIt seems you are referring to a technocracy. This could be an efficient means of managing capitalism but it does not remove capitalism. Political systems are subordinate to their economic base not the other way around. A technocratic system that scientifically negates the consequences of capitalism will not come about because it would be unprofitable. The capitalist does not want to address the consequences of their actions so the emotional/cultural appeal keeps us feeling politically engaged while actually doing nothing. They cannot investigate and solve the worlds problems without incriminating themselves.
It will always be the stick.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are countries like China and USSR considered "communist" despite never achieving communism?English
172·8 days agoBecause their governments are/were made up of communists with the goal of achieving communism

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why does it seem like the majority of people think problems are caused by drugs rather than problems causing people to turn to drugs?English
3·11 days agoRugged individualism and idealism. We have long been conditioned to view these things as a personal moral failure rather than the inevitable result of social pressures. Mainly because this is more convenient for our masters.
That is allowed :)

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Have you ever found yourself in a personal situation that felt like it contradicted your political beliefs?English
10·16 days agoYeah of course, that’s part of the process of developing a consistant political perspective. You’re gonna fuck up and violate your own internal moral code or develop one that contradicts itself in some ways. That’s okay as long as you learn from it no?
As long as you are also taking other actions to further the goal of revolution. I am not the type to take issue with electoralism if electoralism isn’t what you spend all of your energy on. I would also encourage you to keep your expectations (but not your demands) for these candidates low as to avoid falling into doomerism.
We don’t have enough people or a well enough organized proletariat. We need you and people like you to get involved before it is possible. A revolution must be popular, it must be rooted in the will of the working class not a small and insignificant minority that most people haven’t had any real interaction with. We can’t just do a revolution spontaneously either, there needs to be a revolutionary moment created by a significant crisis within capitalism that just isn’t there yet for the imperial core. Trying to start a revolution rn would be an exercise in futility.
This is why we agitate for revolution. This is why we point out the flaws in reformism. It is to get enough people on our side for revolution to be possible. Asking why we haven’t revolted already misses the entire point.
