there’s a long history of cops making petty abuses of the power over others they’re granted, and of those additional powers not making their communities any safer. to me this headline reads as “most predictable thing imaginable has come to pass”

here’s my advice:

1. dismantle the surveillance state
2. abolish the institution of prison
3. abolish the police

i’m going to say the 7th generation, but for a different reason. you chose it for community, i choose it for continuity. those consoles were the standard targets for games companies for an uncommonly long time. consoles that came before and since haven’t matched that. some of this, i think, is due to them kind of being architectural dead ends. that was the last console generation where the hardware wasn’t just PC hardware but a little bit different. the PS3 in particular is an incredible feat of human ingenuity with second hand PS3s being hard to find at reasonable prices since the US military depends on them for nuclear research. but all this cleverness made them too expensive to develop for corporations seeking to design hardware to sell at a loss to play games sold at a markup.

but during the era of the 7th generation? it was incredible. whichever console you chose you would have so many options for games that would give you incredible and unique experiences. and the hardware exclusivity was an actual real constraint sometimes with developers knowing they were making a PS3 exclusive or a 360 exclusive targeting that hardware to get every drop of performance out of the hardware, whereas now it’s just a form of manufactured scarcity since new consoles are on the same architecture as PCs nowadays.

the games that have come since that generation also haven’t had any fundamental paradigm shifts in how they’re played that makes them more fun either. there have been some paradigm shifts that have made gaming less safe and healthy to engage in with companies shifting the brain chemistry of their players by creating addictive structures in the rulesets and paradigms of the games.

in conclusion: 7th generation good, industry bad

i know this isn’t my place as a cis white dude, but can anarchist.nexus be a resource for a women’s space? i’ve been looking for gaps in the threadiverse we could nurture and foster. my #1 concern lately with the makeup of the hegemony of the threadiverse lately has been:

• eurocentricism
• authoritarianism by default
• black and white thinking (see above)
• unchecked and unchallenged mysoginy

my commitment to you as a cis white dude admin would be to stay the fuck out of the way of moderators looking to host a women’s issues community here, within reason. obviously it wouldn’t be okay to break instance rules against bigotry and such, but i can offer my commitment to shutting my mouth and knowing my role

for real! this should be about how we are on the precipice of letting people with debilitating conditions enjoy their lives and spend time with people they care about instead of immediately saying “just think of the implications for shareholder value!”

exactly. both parties fundamentally support and enable eachother. it’s a decision between coke and pepsi. not enough people are aware of ale-8 or are able to get the word out about ale-8 for ale-8 to become viable without fundamental systemic changes to how all of this works. so for the most part, you should be out in the streets normalizing that an annual choice between two cola products is an illusion of choice, and then when you cast your ballot do so with the perspective of what it is on that ballot that gives you more room to have conversations about ginger-ale, orange soda, citrus drink, sassparilla, or even water.

we have a problem in this country where somehow not enough people know the difference between the two parties, and at the same time not enough people know how little that difference truly is. if we want to change this we have to educate people, and if we want to do that we have to focus less on the teams and more on the rules that underlay the sport

politics as sports will kill everyone

in a dipolar political environment you will have two coalitions of the same basic political beliefs form representing more and less extreme versions of the same core beliefs. it is the republicans listed who are associated with the shift rightward in the dipolar political environment, however, the democrats then just… operate in that environment. for example. it was under w bush we got the patriot act, but it wae under obama that all of the government spying edward snowden revealed occurred. the republicans break open some clay pot equivalent of pandora’s box, but then the democrats weild those powers without accountability because no president has been accountable to anyone since the 1970s.

so what do we do about this? to me it seems that the best course is to focus on improving things where you can. generally, that’s going to be locally in your neighborhood. anytime you vote, don’t vote based on one side or the other side being the side for good or the side for evil. they’re ultimately both neo-liberal or neo-conservative wings of the same fascist party. instead ask which candidate is going to make local organizing harder and work to avoid letting them get into office.
