WhatsApp being not as bad as it used to be is a low bar that doesn’t really speak to any sort of reliability or trustworthiness

I don’t get it. How could having autism or whatever be “hip”? Surely it’s undesirable for most, because it tends to ostracize them, no?
At least as far as ive seen, people aren’t labelling them autistic to influence the way they are treated by the world- they are claiming the label because they see it as an explanation for previously unexplained anomalies in how the world treats them. It’s used as a flag to build community around those with shared experiences, not a doctor’s note to get out of gym class.

Right, because proprietary software is never abandoned. At least foss leaves you with the source code so you or other folk can carry on the torch in the original dev’s absence.
Bluesky will be in the same boat given enough time. Mastodon (or other actually federated options) is the only proper stand-in for twitter.
So, no then. Cool, thanks.
Cops are cops, whether they be foreign or domestic. Why split hairs?
I keep seeing people making this argument in this thread but it’s never backed up by anything, just insults and repeating propaganda. Can you imperialists at least engage with the historical discussions in this thread that you’re pretending not to see?
Trading brown people overseas’ lives for your own comfort and livelihood is still- believe it or not- wrong.
And like your example perfectly shows, that line of argument is only ever meaningfully deployed to specifically benefit the state and oligarchs. It’s never used to encourage awareness of economic inequalities that push people toward cycles of incarceration.
Hey man, I just fill deliver fuel for the orphan-crushing machine company. Don’t hold me responsible for the monsters who actually crush the orphans!
Do you have… any supporting evidence? Or is this just based off the warm fuzzy feeling you got from doing the pledge of allegiance in school?
Call it fewer options, I call it curated options. Yeah, I don’t get to install every piece of software I could on windows (though that list is shrinking really fucking fast), but i also don’t want to. I don’t need to put energy into cracking adobe software so they can steal my licensing and farm my data to sell or train their AI on.
I don’t want to use a drill that only works with screws that are officially approved for DeWalt drills, and I don’t want to hack a DeWalt drill to make it work with other screws. I want a drill that fits whatever screw I want. People aren’t switching to Linux because of the vast amount of software available for it, it’s because it’s the option that actually respects us as consumers.
I’ve worked in IT my whole career and if someone wants me yo install Linux on their machine, or has questions about bash scripting, I’m dropping whatever I’m doing to help them.
How else are my friends and family supposed to teach each other it nobody teaches them? Not everyone was as lucky as I was to be encouraged to pursue tech, that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve the same privacy and options that I benefit from.
