Yeah I’m in a (primarily) Windows shop too, but we have many Linux servers that I manage and maintain. My DD at home is CachyOS, and I’m very familiar with management of a fleet of Ubuntu servers. I’ve already told the guys on my team I’m ready to just switch at work too. Might cause me some management issues at times though because of needing Windows Server management tools (e.g. RSAT), but I suppose I could jump box that.

Yeah I gave up on flatpak when I wanted to use it with Steam + gamescope + gamemode + MangoHUD. It just wasn’t worth the hassle of configuring all the permissions, especially for someone who doesn’t mind updating the native install.

At this point, if you have hardware, Linux is a good choice. New or old. The older it is might change which distro, but still a good choice.

Your mistake is thinking it’s a hive mind in the first place. People argue on here all the same as they did on Reddit. The only things the fediverse provides us are avoiding a highly commercialized forum, freedom of app choice, and controls in what instances we accept communication with. Probably some other major things, but those are my top three.

Just stop yelling into an obvious echo chamber and find communities you’re more aligned with.

Agreed. I like my current job more than the previous one that I put 23 years into, but I have to remind myself to value my time more than I had been. I still put in a lot of hours when I’m knee deep into a project, but it’s almost always at my own leisure that I do so. It’s a crazy balance of respecting myself while also fighting off the imposter syndrome because the guys in my team are always really supportive because of my experience. It’s strange going from a job where I have to defend my actions and choices to a job where I’m inherently trusted.

But yes, if I could go back, I would tell my younger self that my job pays the bills but it’s not who I am. Leave the job behind me after hours while doing what I can to do a good job while on the clock.

Yep. Already did at home and I still need Windows at work. I may get to that point eventually but not there yet myself. When it’s time for a hardware refresh for me, I think I’ll push for Linux and see if I can work on ways to roll it out elsewhere too. I really need to find a way to manage it in a similar way to Group Policy, but haven’t looked into it too much yet.

I wouldn’t say there’s anything bad about Nginx, but for a reverse proxy, Caddy just makes things so much easier since certificate issuance and management is the most frustrating thing about hosting web sites. At work, I pushed us to Caddy and we have 301 certificates running on it currently and it has zero issues with it. The other guys love how hands off it is too, especially now that I moved us to using Postgres for its storage.

The best part about using an RPN calculator (I also had an HP) was that if someone asked if they could borrow it, I could tell them that if they call do 1+1 and get 2 on it, they could use it. No one ever was successful.

RPN is great though, it’s so fast if you could quickly organize the order of operations.

Were you using the enterprise install without a license or team edition install? I’m on team edition and haven’t upgraded to v11 yet.

While I don’t need constant updates, the app is only a little over 2 years old now, has been 1y9m since the last update, and has in-app purchases of up to $100 to support it. Going silent is fine but “always been like that” when this is gap of time for updates is unprecedented? I may come back if I hear it’s been updated, but it’s having problems as a result of updates to the instances I frequent.

I’m not talking about this particular article, I’m talking about the sentiment of wanting to shut off the conversation about those topics you mentioned. Like I said, do what you have to do and take care of your own mental health. I assume that if you were only talking about reposting of this article you’d not have mentioned your whole list of topics.

Yes, please just hide these. We ignoring these issues at large is how we got to where we’re at and it’ll continue getting worse if we just stop talking about it. But you need to do what you can to take of yourself, first and foremost.

Are you me? This is exactly what I needed too because I was on Sync for years now and had no idea development stopped. Started to notice a lot of small issues here and there with it and finally saw there’s been no updates on almost 2 years.

I tried Voyager and I liked the gestures for votes and being able to customize things pretty well. Also trying out Boost right now and I like how familiar it is to me since I used it on Reddit, but now I’m missing the gestures.
