When I was a teenager, I made a trebuchet. It was so fun. It was not sophisticated at all – just made of 2x4 with a steel rod as the axle. The axle was about 1 m from the ground, to give you a sense of its size. It wasn’t large, but it could throw things quite far (about 60 m).

It just occurred to me that with the recent advancements in cargo-container-sized nuclear reactors, they would excellent fit to power aircraft due to their high energy densities. There were attempts at nuclear-powered aircraft in the past using older technology, but IIRC they irradiated crews and were primarily for bombers carrying nukes that would supposedly need to be in the air continuously for days at a time.

The article says that they contain NaCrO₂. That means that, by mass, they are 21% Na, 49% Cr, and 30% O. So I’m curious: why are they called sodium batteries, and not chromium batteries?

Haha. I used Lemmy.ml for a little while, and I noticed that it had a lot of pro-China posts and tankies, to the point that I found it likely to be state-sponsored propaganda. It’s reassuring to hear that someone else noticed the bias.

The lack of physical accountability, the inherent difficulty of text communication (avoiding ambiguity without the help of a face or body language), all this tends to make people into worse versions of themselves.

This is so true, and I hate it. I actually find Nextdoor quite refreshing because people are posting as their real selves, and nobody wants to be known as the local asshole. (Before someone makes an assumption, I’m not suggesting that we de-anonymize every social media platform. I just like having a platform that isn’t anonymous.)

I had a discussion with my boss today about potential ways to write code with AI and have confidence in the results without reviewing every line. You’d also have to automate the reviews in some way, and therefore also a way to confirm that the reviewer AIs are working properly, etc. The conversation discouraged me because it made me feel like I’ll end up being a manager of AIs who write the code and test cases, and I’ll just be an ape who manually tests some of the behavior before approving it for release. This is essentially what managers have been doing with human development and QA engineers in the past, but even so, I have a really hard time letting go and not reviewing every line of code myself.
