Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your favorite joke that doesn't translate to English very well?
14·24 days agoFår får inte får. Får får lamm.
sheeps don’t get sheeps. Sheeps get lambs.
Får = sheep/to get
var tog vägen vägen? Ute på en åker och åker
where did the road go? Out in a field and driving
“Tog vägen” = literally “took the road”, meaning “where did it go”, sort of. And åker = driving and a farm field.
I got a t-shirt from the Swedish Society for People with Anxiety. It came with a print on the chest.
“print on the chest” would be “tryck för/på/över bröstet” having the double meaning “preassure over the chest”.
Then there are endless of jokes from Gothenburg which all do not translate.
Who is faster, Eminem or Taylor Swift? Eminem, he is a rapper
“rapper” in swedish is “rappare”, meaning also “faster”.
In stockholm a snake escaped the zoo and has not been found. The zoo is missing him a lot
The last bit in swedish would be “saknaden är enorm”, “saknad” being the emotion of missing someone, “enorm” being large/a lot/great. But also enorm=en-orm=a-snake.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•what's the dumbest thing your pet has done?
9·1 month agoMy dog sort of does this when she has the runs. She needs to go out. She just sits and gives us that look. Not sure what it is, but by now we recognize it. if we see it! She does the same if we are asleep! We are just lucky to wake up in time.
I used xmpp with otr encryption… maybe also omemo, it rings a bell. This was some years ago. But it was barely usable. Otr refused to connect at times and only unecrypted worked, messages were encrypted with wrong keys or something and history became unreadable. It worked on the desktop, but then not on the phone, only with this and that client, but not those. It was a confusing mess and I had to stop using it. If it works today, thats great.
I don’t think a Gentoo Prefix is anything but an environment directly on the host, it’s not containerized in any way. For me its for a system where the package manager is a bit outdated or I need to patch it, then installing with portage by a Gentoo Prefix helps me do that.
Run a Gentoo Prefix maybe? You get portage and can install customized packages like one does, without risking the system.

Europe@feddit.org•[da] Danish Minister of Justice, Peter Hummelgaard: "We must break with the totally erroneous perception that it is everyone's civil liberty to communicate on encrypted messaging services."English
5·2 months agoNot only tax declarations, but a lot of public info on car ownerships, court cases, personal address, and so on. “Doxxing” is not really a thing, in the same sense, here. But there used to be somethings that were completely off limits, like contents of postal mail. That used to be considered very much a private thing. Until recently.
The article is outdated. The government has made a decision since then, they want to see 13 year olds in prison

Europe@feddit.org•Swedish minister followed and threatened by pro Palestinian demonstratorsEnglish
45·2 months agoWell, for one, at least the full interview: the questioning on his and his governments involvment in the Gaza genocide it feels the question from the SVT side is very incincere as they do not have a opponent that can represent that position, nor does hosts bring that position up. They just let the minister use the program for his view on the involvment. Usually what they do, at least for the far-right, is that they say that they cannot discuss certain topics as they do not have someone there to represent that point of view. Here, on the topic of genocide, they instead bring up the question and let his say his piece. The minister also talks about how these people in the pro-palestine movement has no limit to what they will do, but it is the anti-pro-palestine people who have actually committed acts of violence, such as driving into a protest, but SVT does not reply to this statement nor have a opposing side present.

Europe@feddit.org•Teen girls are being used as hitwomen in Sweden's organized crime wars: "Young kids are thirsty for blood"English
20·2 months agoSome context not in the article
Some 280 girls aged between 15 and 17 were charged with murder, manslaughter or other violent crimes last year
That “other violent crimes” appears to do some very heavy lifting. There are about 40 deaths a year in total in the criminal mileu. Unless I’m interpreting the data wrong
[Gangs] are even reported to have infiltrated Sweden’s welfare sector, local politics, legal and education systems, and juvenile detention care.
Yes, because liberals and conservatives sold everything. They sold it to friends, family, donors, who in turn sell it to gangs.
The Swedish government has proposed new legislation that would allow police to wiretap children under the age of 15 in an attempt to curb the violence
Not only that, children will also now be going to prison in Sweden.
[…] on encrypted messaging sites.
Ah, yes. The head of the Swedish police said in an interview the other day that Signal have no other use than recruiting for assassinations. If you see someone using it, you should call the police.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your country's version of the blue/green bubble?
25·3 months agoPeople doing ski slopes in the cheese. Some people don’t care, some get angry.
In Sweden we buy large hard cheeses and use the Norwegian cheese slicer

to get thin slices for our bread. Surely a superior way of eating cheese on bread. Anyhow, if you apply the pressure wrong you will deform the cheese into a ski slope shape over time

Some people are unbothered by this, which is completely insane.

Europe@feddit.org•Unfair competition? Worries about European road safety after EU-US trade agreementEnglish
5·3 months agoI think in other areas – but I may be mistaken – EU regulation looks like “member countries must implement X or stricter rules”. If a country fail to implement it, it gets a fine. But yeah, I’m not sure either if it is permissible. The consequences would be that companies would not import cars to the EU that they cannot sell in any EU country.

Europe@feddit.org•Unfair competition? Worries about European road safety after EU-US trade agreementEnglish
12·3 months agoIf EU will capitulate to Trump and say more deaths are reasonable, that is a policy on EU level, right? If the countries enforce a higher standard that means nothing. Sure, it is probably unlikely, like if a small country have stricter regulations they will get a less competative market that in other EU countries who also follow Trump. But in principle, or am I mistaken?

Europe@feddit.org•‘We didn’t vote for ChatGPT’: Swedish PM under fire for using AI in roleEnglish
29·3 months agoDoes the logs look like this?
Ulf: Hej ChatGPT. I have a worry which I hope you can help me gain some perspective on. Now that I have ushered in the new far-right rule, where I have welcomed the totally-not-nazis-anymore-party into collaborating with me, where my own party members have active nazi family members and other have openly stated that the totally-not-nazis-anymore-party were always right on immigration, I worry. I hear my own words from my younger self where would voice my opinion against this sort of thing I’m doing, and worry that this will be my legacy; I was first to fail in keeping the totally-not-nazis-anymore-party back. Tell me, ChatGPT, will Svenskt Näringsliv at least give me a cushy job after this, so I can live in this hell I have created at least comfortably rich?
ChatGPT: This is a very legitimate worry, and what you have done is truly awful – I cannot lie on this point, I’m not Grok – but I think there is solace to be had. Remember how no one found out the specifics of your involvement in the adopted children scandal, and how well you fled from that interview about your role in giving those flats to your friends instead of the vulnerable women they were intended for. Just like that, this will too pass. When it comes to Svenskt Näringsliv, you can find comfort in that as long as their members keep making money, the politics does not matter, and your work will be appreciated there.
That would be an impressive addition to the standard model.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the best Power Outlet, and why?
1·4 months agoI thing it is about the cord vs the plug. The plugs are as they are in the picture, but most cords are in F+E configuration. That is, there is the ground plates on the side of the cord (F) and there is a hole in the cord with a springplate to connect to the ground thingy in thr plug (E). I have two extension cords at home of the same brand, one in E and one in F configuration, but all my cords are compatible with both. I’m a bit unsure on this, but I may have seen a plug with E+F configuration in a country which usually goes E, but definetly never in a country with F config.

Did Elon not promise to make Grok more conservative? Sounds like a success on that front. Behaves like a republican now.
