  • This probably isnt what you’re looking for, but you never specified a page size so…

I love thermal printers, like the ones that print receipts at the cashier. There’s no ink; you just replace the little roll. They are great for text, just pipe a shopping list to lp and out it comes.

I have a printer for full-sized sheets but there’s no comparison to the thermal on OP’s criteria. Except open hardware… I don’t think there are any printers today that provide schematics.

  • I have been using vaultwarden, which is a rust implementation of bw.

The guy that ported bw to rust originally named it “bitwarden-rust” until he got a copyright letter from bw saying not to use their name. Guy makes no money from the project but complied and renamed it to vaultwarden.

Point is, I’m not promoting vaultwarden because I’m obsessed with rust… It’s just that I suspect that bw will soon decide that they have enough users and it’s time to enshittify for profit.

  • I used to pitch signal’s encryption first. I got into so many pointless arguments that I stopped even mentioning encryption. What’s signal? Its an app with group chat and video calls. That’s all you need to know.

Two of my friends independently discovered the secret to converting their families to signal. Make it a premium form of communication. Tell people close to you that you check your whatsapp or facebook occasionally because of the spam volume… The best way to reach me is on signal.

Had a kid this year and we don’t post pix of him to social media. They all get sent to a signal group. You want the baby pix? You get signal! Even his 90-year-old great grandma is in it.

  • I think I have the same protectli as you and it is awesome. Need it for my 2.5gb uplink. I use openwrt on it… Didn’t really like opnsense. I am more used to linux than bsd.

I host lots of services and get bombarded by scrapers, scanners, and skids both at home and on my VPSs.

I use ipset for the usual blocklists which I download regularly. I also have tarpits on 22/tcp (endlessh). I pipe the IPs from the endlessh logs into fail2ban which feeds the ipsets. I have ipset blocks and fail2ban on my home firewall and all VPSs and coordinate over mqtt. So any fail2ban trigger > mqtt > every ipset block. Touch my 22/tcp anywhere and you get banned instantly everywhere. The program I use for this is called vallumd and it runs on openwrt.

I also put maltrail everywhere but I’m not totally sure how to interpret and respond to the results. Probably will implement a pipe from maltrail to my mqtt > blocklist setup.

    I don’t do any network-level adblocking… Might be a future project.
