2·1 year agoUnless you want to take out a whole bunch of them. Swarm of nanosats with some kind of miniexplosives or even just one-use engines to force deorbiting would probably still be more efficient, unless…
Unless you want to go for geostationary. A real crowd of satellitrs which have a feature of always looking at the same part of the Earth. While it would be very easy to send a boom device to low earth orbit (also very crowded), erasing a bunch of satellites there would be a temporary inconvenience (let’s not talk about Kessler) since a lot of what’s important is either a global constellation (starlink, gps) or has redundancies (earth observation comes to mind). But explode a nuke in the geostationary over the US and suddenly America has no sat TV/radio, no weather sat coverage and it’s harder to patch up than “just” replacing missing nodes of a constellation.
The commissioner responsible for the chat control was thoroughly corrupt by a company which created the scanning system. She was also either unbelievably dense or very, VERY dedicated to her role of a pearl-clutching, think-of-the-children granny. To the point of arguing with IT specialists on TV.
And the attack was done by rogue non-state actors. Europe agreed to go burn a whole district because a thug who lived roughly there punched USA in the face. Now Europe faces an entire mafia from another town and Trump says “should’ve bought better gear, bye suckers”.
OK so what does it mean for Haley?
Musky and Bezos are probably well aware of this so they happily pour billions into these systems. Whoever gets them up first is essentially taking up space others may want to use later on. The endgame is probably “make the world dependent on MY sat system and hike rates”. And if the countries wanted to lay cable? Force the world to bail me when the overblown constellations collapse financially - basically make the kessler the future authorities’ problem. Privatise profits, socialise losses, fuck everyone else because I got mine. If things go well the men in charge won’t even be alive anymore when shit hits the fan.
Why think they don’t? Amazon web service is, well, Amazon, so it’s like a Bezos-funded library - if he or other execs wish so they can preserve whatever they wish for as long as they can afford electricity and maintenance. The same goes with google or facebook … the real question is what will be chosen for preservation when inevitably the reaper comes for these corps in their current form.
Can’t scotus just stall, for example say that they will take up the case in idk 2026 and call it a day? I mean I would not like it and a lot of people wouldn’t but at this point they don’t even pretend to be unbiased, right?
There’s probably much more. Half of them only recognised in their village somewhere in the middle of South Asia, the other half too burnt out with work and continuous crises to notice they could be good at something.
Nyaaah, when will people understand? No one in the rich and powerful and tech circles cares about people. We’re “human resource” and always have been, one more mineral to be strip-mined until exhaustion (cf. South Korea) or obsolence (cf. echbros’ AI wet dreams). Once gone or too hard to mine, the drilling ops move on to another quarry just like with minerals (offshoring).
High fertility in the West is bad because the American and European human mines are capital-intensive while the global South still has billions of units laying bare on the ground. “Pronatalism” is only about the top of pyramid and the narrow slice just below it - white, educated, well-mannered, elegant, artistically minded and creative societe who perpetuate the imaginary, self-proclaimed “western culture”. Shame they are also those who are too worried to have lots of kids in this economy and climate, but oh well.

2·2 years agoScooter. Not an electric one. I had a thought once “hey I did ride one in childhood, maybe it can be a bit of nostalgic fun from time to time”. Got myself the cheapest Chinese thing I could find, “no point investing too much into a fad”.
Turned out a scooter is absolute peak urban mobility. Short distances become much shorter. Mid-long distances become short. Granted, for a longer trip somehow the time gains diminish, probably because it’s not as efficient as a bike. But a scooter isn’t a long-hauler. It’s there to zip through an empty mall. It’s there to be folded up in a second and brought into a bus or a shop without being a hassle. It’s like 3-4 kg, not too fast for sidewalks but fast enough for bike roads, extremely easy to stop, doubles as a cart when carrying bags of groceries home.
The chinese one broke after 1 season because I was riding it everywhere. Then I got myself one from a better company, I chose it for small weight and portability. It’s technically children’s thing but I’m well below weight tolerance and also smol so it’s easy to handle. It’s already like a 5th year and whenever it’s not raining or too cold I ride it for shopping, errands, leisure walks, to work… Almost daily.
Maybe not yet, but…
- Spez will turn Reddit into a bot farm and sell this as training data
- Musk turns Twitter into a bigoted cesspool and will sell this as training data, which will subsequently be flagged for low quality (also: a botfarm)
- Threads is a corporate ad dashboard (and we already know how easy it is to GPT copy) and Zuck will sell this as training data
- Facebook is either dead or only good for boomers and Poles
- blogs are dead
- Fediverse is out there waiting to be scraped but possibly too small to sustain a big model
We’te getting there, hopefully.

The link is the same kind of self-delusion people show around all of these generative tools: “look the faces are weird, the bird has wrong feathers, the cat has only 2 legs, nothing to worry about” while forgetting that most everything else in a clip works well and that it is the first-of-the-first releases which will get gradually better.
