So much this. We’re paying for our son’s tuition, car, car insurance and health insurance while he lives with us and goes to culinary school. After he graduates, we will wean him off as he gets a job. He will remain on our health insurance until 26.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the weirdest hobby you've heard of?
8·2 months agoHe uses a special website to keep track because apparently he is not alone in that hobby. But I like your idea! I’ve wanted to get into geocaching but never got around to it.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the weirdest hobby you've heard of?
23·2 months agoCounting counties aka keeping track of every county you visit. My husband has this hobby, and sometimes on road trips we drive way out of the way for him to grab a new county.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you do anything while you watch movies/tv shows?
3·2 months agoI knit, especially easier designs that don’t require much attention.
Thanks for the shoutout! This is it! The moment I should have trained for!
Does coffee count? I just woke up.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the closest you ever got to hosting refugees?
3·9 months agoFor me, the closest was volunteering at a local non-profit that provides temporary housing to immigrants who are released from the local detention center and may not even know where the hell they are. They bus them in from Texas (we are in Colorado) and detain them here. Casa de Paz is the name of the non-profit in case anyone feels generous. They do amazing work and provide much-needed services and tons of empathy for the people they serve.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone know why americans are relatively unconcerned about dying to totally preventable stuff like disease?
3·9 months agoThis will make you see red. My nephew cannot get vaccinated for legitimate health reasons. His parents were always pro-vax until it came time for the Covid vaccine. Then they became all “mRNA is a new technology, we don’t have enough research.” We basically stopped talking to them after my husband yelled at his brother (nephew’s dad) that he is risking killing his own son if he gets Covid. So fucking stupid. Yes, they are conservative although they claim not to support Trump.

8·9 months agoI’m concerned but I don’t know what I can do about that other than make sure my whole family is vaccinated.
Meditation and mindfulness absolutely have scientifically proven effects.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•If fleeing a country, what items would have good resale value?
161·10 months agoPrinter ink.
I’m just kidding… listen to all the other smart people in this thread and not me.
A whole bunch of professional groups are on there. It’s one way I get client referrals and network.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What was the most interesting thing you have seen happen at another table while you were eating out at a restaurant?
14·1 year agoAn elderly couple sat next to us, and the man sent his elk chop back twice because it was “too seasoned.” The second time they put no seasoning on it for him, but he still claimed that it had “the seasoning from the pan.” He then proceeded to order salmon instead (with no seasoning) and complain loudly the whole time. No tip for the waitress.
For context, this was a nice restaurant at Crater Lake in Oregon. My husband also ordered the elk chop, and said it was the best meal he’s ever had. We tipped the waitress double and had a great laugh with her about the whole situation after the elderly couple left.
Good to know!

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Russian lemmurs of lemmy, has xenophobia hit you?
12·1 year agoI live in the US and I haven’t noticed any xenophobia. I have heard a couple of people refer to “Russians” like we are a monolith but they were still understanding of someone like me who is very anti-war.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Russian lemmurs of lemmy, has xenophobia hit you?
10·1 year agoYou can still leave but you might have to jump through hoops. My mom had to go to Kazakhstan to get an American visa to come visit me because all embassies are closed in Russia.
