  • For me the downside is the precedent it sets. Yes, most of us agree getting rid of TikTok is a good thing, but how long until they start banning other sites “for the children”? How long until they target federated sites they can’t control “for the children”?

    To top it off, it doesn’t solve the data harvesting problem their so scared of with TikTok. They only care about that one because the data is going to China. Instagram and others can stay because they are American companies spying on citizens.

  • The recent macbooks are heading back in the right direction.

    I think a lot of the complants come from wanting a portable computer/setup, and having a hub or a bunch of adapters takes away the portability.

    I think the ideal I/O for me would be;

    • Power
    • 4x USBc (displayport, high speed, etc.)
    • 1x USBA (flash drives are still mostly A, and if you have a wireless USB mouse, not needing an adapter or dealing with bluetooth is great)
    • 3.5 headphone/mic combo jack
    • Ethernet
    • HDMI, at least until more monitors have USBC inputs, although having an adapter cable isn’t too bad.

    This is where I like framework approach with the customizable IO, but I think they need to shrink the blocks to give 6-8 ports. 4 is simply not enough, with one used up for power.

  • What are you looking to get out of your dumb phone experience?

    It sounds like you want/need the smart phone part, but not the doom scroll and spyware part.

    For that I offer the following advice;

    Step 1 is to delete all unnecessary apps. Keep 1 or 2 time killers, preferably puzzle games or something not related to endless scrolling, that you can start/stop anytime.

    If you have one, make an old phone your “entertainment” device. This is for things like Lemmy and whatever else you do fun/pass time. Leave it the bathroom or at your spot to relax. This way you can get your internet fix, but it doesn’t follow you throughout the day.

    Step 2 is to make sure you set your notifications right, only communication from actual people (text/call) and important stuff like work/bank emails should make noise. Everything else can shove off.

    On the spyware front, Pixel+Graphine OS is a good option, it does works with MS authenticator.
