Europe@feddit.org•New Refrigerators, Washing Machines, Furniture and Tires Will All Have to Last Longer, Europe MandatesEnglish
21·1 year agoAnd they currently engineer product to have things fail right after their warranty expires, so, that’s not really a concern, since we’re already living with the that.
Which is exactly my point of why mandated warranty period does not really fix the core of the problem, which is intentionally making products not last. It’s just a bandaid solution (Yes I know a solution is still better than nothing, and may be the first step to address this issue). What I want to see is prolonging the life of a product by letting consumers freely fix their own stuff (parts, schematics, etc.) without the manufacturer locking things down, even after the warranty expires.

3·1 year agoAs much as I love this, I fail to see how this would be able to be written into law. It’s basically gov mandated warranty period. If the goal is to have manufacturers make products that last, how long is long enough for every product category? What’s to say that they do the same thing and design products that fail right after warranty ends? Who decides if there is foul play in designing faulty products and how? Unless the gov makes their own product that lasts for 20 years and tells every other company to use this as a baseline otherwise get fined, I don’t know how they would be able to enforce this.
I just think this is a big gray area and it would be hard to make this cut and clear. The only thing I think they could do for now is to have companies provide repair manuals and provide parts for a set amount of years after product launch, and repairs should be able to be made by customers themselves without needing to go through 1st party verification like Apple requires with their phones.
That’s interesting! Thanks for the reply!
Are there any music pieces that are your favorite because of synesthesia? Or pieces that you couldn’t enjoy because of it?
I’d also imagine that watching movies must be a very different experience for you too haha.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What successful or popular movie that many loved you just HATE?English
1·1 year agoIt would, but it also probably would be a bad idea to do so. How many people would come back for a part 2 of a documentary film? I think not a lot.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What successful or popular movie that many loved you just HATE?English
351·1 year agoNot necessarily hate, but did not like as much as the rest of the internet: Oppenheimer
The moment I left the theater, I thought it should have been longer. Yes, I think an already 3hr film should be even longer. Just torture the audience at this point. But I thought that there was just so much stuff to cram into that 3hr length, there was not enough room for the story to breath, even if those stories were needed to paint a better picture of Oppenheimer’s life, morals, and conflicts.
I’d still recommend it to people. If anything, it’s still a visually well directed film. But if you aren’t a physics/history buff, you might not enjoy the story as much.
In my opinion, a better history based movie would be The Imitation Game. Much more focused story, even if some aren’t historically accurate.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How valid is the claim that people coming or going to blue sky/mastodon/X/Truth Social will cause echo chambers to increase? is it bad?English
8·2 years agoBlocking + Algorithms feeding things similar to your taste is already forming an echo chamber. Bluesky with it’s community driven block lists and starter packs makes this much easier too.
It can be a good thing or bad. Just depends on what you want out of the platform.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you deal with feeling like a failure due to being poor?English
5·2 years agoI may also suggest keeping a notebook and writing it down to remind yourself what your priorities are.
I forgot where I saw this, but making a daily/weekly list of every little thing you are grateful of can also help you get out of that loop of feeling bad.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do you deal with feeling like a failure due to being poor?English
5·2 years agoI don’t think I qualify at giving serious life advices, but I want you to know one thing, you haven’t failed your son. You are doing your best, and your son knows it. The fact that you are doing everything you can to raise your son, and your son comforting you when you feel down, says to me that you love him and he loves you back. That’s not failure at all. The only time you would truly fail yourself and your son, is when you stop trying.
Best wishes to you both!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some excellent YouTube channels you recommend?English
8·2 years agoI’m surprised no one mentioned this channel yet. Previously known for making top 10 facts of everything, but has since transitioned into long form documentary of mysteries. He takes a long time between videos, but its always an instant click whenever he uploads. Does his own research, cites them, makes the background music and all of the animations for it. Honeypot for react channels too.
Motorcycle related videos. Does some motorcycle reviews, but the explanation type videos they mostly do are awesome. Even if you’re not a motor head, you can always learn/enjoy something from their videos. If not the knowledge and physics, then the excellent videography and story telling Ryan puts in there.
The Youtube Appliance guy. I kid, but he does excellent videos delving into tech in general appliances or retro stuff. One of his best videos is about dishwasher detergents, so good he had to make 2 more follow up videos about it. Seriously, go give it a watch.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why do masks make people so angry?English
22·2 years agoI live in Taiwan, people here wear masks for whatever reason and no one bats an eye. You can wear a mask if you are sick, have too much acne and want to hide it, or because you are a medical worker and need to protect yourself and patients like OP, etc.
It also helps that we all went through the SARS pandemic, which could be seen as the previous version of COVID. Unlike COVID, SARS transmits via respiratory droplets after symptoms like fever arise, so everyone learned to wear masks during that time, and it worked. When COVID came, we knew what to do.

2·2 years agoYou’re lucky there’s a higher up that could talk down the even higher ups. Though, sometimes it’s not even about the r&d teams.
I saw company wide HR educational emails or courses telling you how to improve you work quality/efficiency, and one of them tells us to “research AI” and learn how to utilize it, talking about how great it is and improved the work efficiency by 30%. Sure, it has its uses, but I won’t go touting how great it is. And with how ChatGPT works, you have to be the biggest idiot in the world to upload all your sensitive stuff to ChatGPT just for it to make a spreadsheet faster. But without these disclaimers in the email, I doubt regular clerical staff knows about this, and it’s extremely dangerous.
