Like anything else, they have their place. But they’ve been shoved into use cases they dont fit as well.
Like anything else, they have their place. But they’ve been shoved into use cases they dont fit as well.
Sometimes, things don’t always stay around on the internet, so if there’s something I’ll want to watch or listen to again, I keep it local. Or if there is something that should be preserved, like the data dump of patriotfront that is continually seeding.
It relates to my hobbies, too - all of my photos are stored in raw plus my edits. I am also converting all of the VHS tapes my dad recorded of the family over the years and I serve them up to my family on my media server, along with the videos of different things of my kids, like dance recitals.
More recently we’ve seen the intentional removal of information on the internet specifically with the US government, so where possible I’ve backed some of that up as well and contributed it to appropriate groups.
Then of course there’s music, movies, tv shows, documentaries, books, comics, and so on, even fan created edits of shows and movies like despecialized edition and 4k77, Harry Potter and the deathly weapons, hackers the 56k upgrade, etc.
Its not meant to just hide on a drive, so its all served up with various services I run, such as jellyfin, audiobookshelf, kavita, etc.
It continually gets worse…
Thats just my main NAS + a media NAS. I also have a backup NAS that replicates the main (well, a lot of it, just the things I’m concerned about backups for) which also is a remote backup for family (where they also have a NAS I set up that is their local storage + my compressed backups).
Which is why my dumb ass is thinking of replacing the two 14ru racks I have with a 44ru (and space for a second) where I hope to be moving within the next year or so.
Yes, there is a lot wrong with me :)
Depends on the hobby because I have too many…
Photography - not much unless I buy used, which is what I usually do. So some funky old lenses and adapters to get on the body, which usually nets some fun results.
Data hoarding - a couple of hard drives. Which I should really do, I’m coming close to 5% free (which sounds like less than it is when you’ve got about 115tb, which is why I’m not rushing out).
Computer Vision / AI - more processing power! But I make work buy me that stuff so its fine.
General compute - about 5 more tiny/mini/micros at the usual price (plus the usual upgrades) to either ads to the cluster or make a new one! Or one or two of the newer little beasts that I will probably be waiting another year or two to pick up.
Bicycling - a good bike for getting around! My bike is about 15 years old now, it was new old stock because no one liked the color apparently - which made it about 1/2 the price of what it should have been. I’ve been replacing gear on it over the years, but I’m tempted to buy something new, honestly less for going fast and maybe more upright, like a hybrid. Which I can get an OK model at that price.
You regularly post interesting (and sometimes funny) content!
Yeah I’ve got nothing either. Kind of one of the reasons I’m on db0 actually.
Mixed.
Some stopped cheering. Others are getting louder.
Must not be a good friend if you installed windows on his PC.
A decent prank though.
I wonder if it is because you added that way, rather than from f-Droid or something.
No idea. If I had a spare still running android (trying out postmarketos on a few devices) I’d like to give it a try. Maybe I’ll spin up a VM.
What apps?
No idea. Play Store then update itself via its at store rev? Preinstalled on a ROM? Via adb?
That said, all the link refers to is a few sample permissions (which would not include F-Droid from that list) and only via certain methods being downloaded. Or they have it wrong and its “opened from”.
Its still shitty, but as of now I’m not sure if there is any impact to installing F-Droid, but I can say the method of installation has complied with previous versions of googles “protections” (as in forced limitations) and that appears to continue to be true.
How did you install aurora store?
I’m curious because ive seen no issues with F-Droid (just had a few updates actually), and the F-Droid team have commented on this sort of approach before, including the method being used for installation.
I don’t use aurora, so I’m not overly familiar.
Just FYI, no, F-Droid will not be impacted.
Links in this comment explain, they are incorrect about how F-Droid works.
I was a brief user of the Beastie going back some time, though I guess a longer semi-user of it as I had in on a sparc I picked up from a computer show for a few years. Didnt do much with it other than have a few dbs on it though!
F-Droid uses Session Installer, which is an “app store” method.
This is not a new issue:
https://www.androidauthority.com/android-15-restricted-settings-sideloading-3481098/
That doesnt appear to be true, the restriction seems to be on apps being installed from file managers, web browsers, messaging, etc.
F-droid and the like are not part of that list.
This still isn’t good, but it doesnt stop you from having F-droid manage your messaging apps it would seem.
Edit: If you’re down voting because you think its using the same method as a file manager as the user that replied to me, this is incorrect. This is also an issue going back several versions.
F-Droid uses a session installer method for 3rd party app stores, it does not use the same method as a file manager.
For an article about a similar issue brought up by similar restrictions in previous updates, you can refer to this article:
https://www.androidauthority.com/android-15-restricted-settings-sideloading-3481098/
You can also refer to this thread in the F-Droid forums which covers this as well, from 2 1/2 years ago:
Which also includes a merged discussion from the last time this came up 9 months ago.
F-Droid has been using the session installer method for quite some time.
But also make sure its current, and hopefully well documented.
For that, I’d highly recommend a power conditioner with outlet controls (and preferably sequencing).
Most are pretty expensive, but you can get something like a surgex squid or a gude expert power control for a few hundred here and there, which will give you great data on power usage as well. You can also grab an older model with serial and/or relay controls, and use a pi or whatever is handy to trigger it. Actually have a setup like that in a few racks for clients (mostly orange pis and a couple of Asus tinker boards).
Hope your trip goes well!
Not really, no.
Tasers can be really fucking dangerous to people. Same with rubber bullets.
Just because its publicly called “non-lethal” doesn’t mean they haven’t caused a lot of people to die.
Without government regulation in a specific area <> anarchist.
Let’s not confuse things.
At that point, that grid connection will be the least of anyone’s worries. The storm in Quebec in… 1990? Ish. tripped breakers, and shut things down for like a day.
A storm on the scale youre talking about I am pretty sure would wipe out satellites (maybe even take them down due to atmospheric drag?), impact cables other than power like copper laid for internet and phone, etc. Grid-connected power or not you’d be severely impacted and potentially at risk.
I think at least one M365 plan includes a windows license now.
