All flags are an expression of opinion. Even the pride flag has different versions that include or exclude different sub-cultures and allies.

This is a case where it’s the government that’s wearing the proverbial cross necklace, not another employee.

Neither are a governmental function. I think that’s the operative comparison to be made here.

We are not an opinion, but I don’t think that’s really a fair summary of my position anyway.

I kind of have to take the plaintiff’s side. The government shouldn’t be flying pride flags any more than they should be installing Nativity scenes. This isn’t about agreeing or disagreeing with the opinion being expressed, but about whether the government should be expressing an opinion at all.

And really all he asked for was to work remotely for the month the flags were up, not to have them removed. I think that actually might fall within the “reasonable accommodation” laws he’s invoking here.

What are you suggesting should have been done here?

“Pissing in the soup” doesn’t really work here unless you’re adulterating the software with something malicious.

To be fair, there are important differences between open source and closed source software.

I started using a white noise machine and fans on high when I lived down the block from a hospital emergency room. It sounded like a jet engine in my bedroom, but my brain learned to interpret the white noise as profound silence. I moved away from the hospital zone but still use the white noise to sleep.

I’m curious how it’s considered a “layoff” if it’s based on performance rather than the job itself being eliminated.

Whenever guillotines are brought up I like to point out that ~90% of the people guillotined during the French Revolution were regular commoners. And the last guy to be guillotined was the guy who had been in charge of deciding who to guillotine next.

“Expressed greater intent to commit rape”

I would really like to know how they measured this. I get the feeling that the men being studied didn’t come out and state, “yes, I have a greater intent to rape” on a survey or something. The researchers must have been using something as a proxy for “intent to rape”.

I’d also like to see the stats for how many of the men have actually raped someone. For example, if 86% are rated as “more likely to rape” after watching porn, but 99.9% don’t rape anyone, then that would suggest there is no correlation between porn and rape.

I do this when it’s a work-related document. Anything personal I write out my first name fully. So good luck forging my signature on possibly the wrong kind of document, people who want to forge my signature but only have one example to work from!

Don’t give up a stronger position for a weaker one in hopes of avoiding a conflict. You’ve only undermined yourself when the conflict happens anyway.

I’m an apartment building superintendent. I once confronted a late night trespasser: a junkie looking for a place to shoot up or snort or whatever his thing was. I demanded that he leave, but realized that I was physically blocking the only exit. He was cornered. So I moved out of the way and suddenly I was the one who was cornered. It all worked out in the end, but for a minute there I was facing a large, angry, paranoid junkie with a knife and no way to escape.

I don’t know what would have happened if I didn’t move to give him an exit, but I know that in doing so I gave up my own exit, and that was dumb.
