Europe@feddit.org•Danish authorities in rush to close security loophole in Chinese electric busesEnglish
3·6 days agoOh they were warned from the defence department a few years ago. It’s been an ongoing process since 2019. Other politicians also made an inquiry about how much it would cost to choose European suppliers in July this year, which showed that equivalent busses from Europe would cost up to 36 million dkk more and that European companies couldn’t actually deliver. At least we know what the savings were, so the question is just what the fix will cost…
I wouldn’t be surprised if the current news is more about the upcoming election than anything. The city busses aren’t that critical in Copenhagen. They have have trains, trams and metros too and everything is in bicycle distance, so shutting down the busses would be a minor inconvenience to most people. It’s not really a serious threat. Also, there really isn’t a threat. It’s only a potential in worst case scenario fan fiction.

4·6 days agoThe way it was done in this case was by ITT offers.
The company Movia, which is owned by the public municipalities and regions, put out a request for busses, including the requirements.
Once the request is out there, they usually do have to accept the cheapest offer that fulfills the requirements, unless there are special situations.
So, the requirements probably didn’t account for this remote controlled thing. Responsibility should by placed at the board of the company.
It would be interesting to read the original request. The terms are usually quite strict, which can also be a problem, for instance if nobody can fulfill them or if the requirements are too specific so only one company can make an offer etc.
Maybe they’re more lax in the company than if it had been a direct purchase from the municipality. It’s quite unusual to see any Chinese suppliers for this sort of thing, because they don’t pay their employees enough. It’s standard terms in all public purchases that suppliers must have employment terms on level with local Danish union workers in the same sectors.
Just another reminder of why it’s not a good idea to privatize public infrastructure…

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's a genre of music you're waiting to have a resurgence?
1·9 days agoNone. I actually hope for something entirely different.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something you do that is not "age appropriate"?
1·14 days agoSame.
I figure I won’t die as long as I kep skating. Skate or die, right?
When someone dies in Mario multiplayer there’s a short pause in the gameplay. It really fucks up everyone else’s timing.

Technology@lemmy.world•Hundreds of public figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Virgin’s Richard Branson urge AI ‘superintelligence’ banEnglish
19·20 days agoI’m not really scared of AI becoming more intelligent. I’m more concerned about stupid people giving control to stupid AI. It’s plenty capable of fucking things up as it is provided it is given access to do so.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•My hot take on the official pronunciation of GNOME
5·22 days agoThe G is silent in English words starting with gn. Gnarly gnats is pronounced narly nats.
There’s not a lot of those words anyway
Gnu and gnome are exceptions only when used to describe the software. The gnu animal and the mythical gnome creature are pronounced with silent gs.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•This just happened to me, and I did waste 1-2h because of it
4·22 days agoI know it’s completely off-topic, but anyway. No, I’m fine with the rake. That’s what’s makes it funny.
It’s the drawing of the skater that is too good, and that doesn’t add up with the other details being wrong. Someone who can draw a skater that good wouldn’t make the other things that wrong or even random.
The rake is drawn as doing a frontside shove-it, popped from mid-air and failing because of gravity suddenly changing in the middle of the sequence. The skater is “obviously” doing a varial heelflip instead of a frontside shove-it.
So that’s the clue to why I thought it was drawn off an actual picture. That the background is also a copy of the original only reaffirms my theory.
In hindsight I can also see that the skater is obviously Andrew Reynolds. The tuck and landing is his signature style.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•This just happened to me, and I did waste 1-2h because of it
212·22 days agoThe last picture in the meme always bothered me, because the sequence doesn’t make any sense physically. (Popping the rake from mid air and doing the wrong flip and such)
So, I went on to find the sequence that I believe it was drawn from.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Should sneakers with lights in the sole exist for adults?
463·23 days agoI’m going with “no”, because it’s a shit product for the environment when you have batteries and electronics fitted into rubber. If the battery runs out, the electronic breaks or the rubber wears out, the entire product is likely to be discarded and burned together.
If you want to attach small lights to your shoes, go ahead. You can then also transfer the lights to your next pair of shoes, change the battery and repair or discard of everything separately.
In my latest setup I’ve chosen to make due with what’s available for Linux. I’m not going to bridge Windows VSTs.
So I don’t mind the software, I’ll use whatever is available, but it was really the hardware issues with Windows that made me switch. I don’t want to spend another night trying to make Windows recognise my old controllers, when they all work without any issues in Linux. I need my tools to work too.
It’s the other way around. Addicting things like drugs etc. are mimicking or triggering the natural endorphins, which are released in sex.
The reason addicts say that drugs are better than sex is that they do the same thing, but the drugs are 100% successful, easier to obtain and dose.
Sex is an instinct, a naturally born addiction. Sex addiction is a different thing though. That’s when people can’t control their urges.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What seems to be difficult to many other people but isn't for you?
2·1 month agoNobody said this had to be easy/everyday things.
There’s a lack of linux native VSTs, but other than that my exp has been that Linux is both easier, less demanding and more stable than Windows for audio. Don’t know how it compares to Mac.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What seems to be difficult to many other people but isn't for you?
7·1 month agoPlumbing. I’m not a plumber and I’m not particularly good at it, but it’s one of those things that most people won’t even consider looking at.
Also, 3D visualization. I had a carpenter do the gutters on my house and I explicitly told him that the reason I didn’t do them myself was that the eaves are slanted inwards so that the slope on the gutters would cause the gutters to go inwards when it goes downwards, and I was unsure what best practise was for that case, where to get the proper hangers for this or if we’d need to put a vertical board up first in order to make it work. He assured me that it’d be fine, having done many gutters before. When I got home, he had put ordinary hangers right on the slanted eaves, and the gutters were halfway under the roof at one end. He stood there scratching his head and tried to argue that the wall of the house was not straight, because he could simply not see any other reason for it to do that.
Yeah that’s a well known southern insult. It’s really not that subtle, but then again, god didn’t intend for everyone to be as smart as you.
“Ding ding ding!”
I think it’s condescending as fuck.
Breaking: This is what they don’t want you to see!

Maybe we shouldn’t have any -isms as totalitarian systems.
Some things should be communistic. Healthcare, infrastructure, basic needs.
Some things should be democratic: Municipality planning, international policies
Some things should have full personal liberty: Arts, religion, relationships.
