Another problem is that cosmic expansion affects the wire itself.
Not if its mithril :P

Says the two day old account…

Again, it depends on what you mean. You’re not really saying what these things are that you expect to disagree on, and that’s the important bit.

It depends what you mean. Individual instances have their own approach to moderation, which influences what you will see and have access to. Some are more hands off than others. But if your “free speech” is really just looking for a free pass to hate on folk, then you won’t have much luck with lemmy. There are instances that allow that, but most other instances block them.

I think its a big positive
That’s an ironic position to hold given your username…

In theory yes, in practice, no.
Nostr uses relays. In some ways, a relay is like an instance on the fediverse. Where they differ though, is that a) relays don’t talk to each other and b) users can sign up to many different relays and pull/push content to all of them.
So in practice, in order to see a wide amount of content, you need to end up connecting to multiple relays. And even though a relay does have some moderation capabilities to block content, unless every relay you use blocks the content from the bigoted account, you’ll see it.
If you signed up only to a single relay, and that relay had good moderation, then in theory, your Nostr experience wouldn’t be terrible, but a single niche relay like that will mean you see basically no content. And as soon as you connect to a larger public relay to get more content, you lose all of the moderation advantages offered by your first instance. Which means in practice, there is no incentive to run a well moderated instance.
And so all of the moderation ends up on the end user, who has to manually block accounts only after they appear and dump their load of hate (at which point, the bigot will just spin up another account). Some people prefer that experience, but when you’re the regular target of hate, that approach just doesn’t work for many folk.

I absolutely appreciate them. They give me the chance to decide for myself whether to engage with a topic, depending on where I’m at. Suicide is often hard for me to deal with, due to my own family circumstances, so sometimes I want to get in and help people who are struggling, but other times, I just need to avoid the discussion for my own wellbeing. Content warnings give me the opportunity to make that choice

I moved away from centralised social media, because social media owned by multinational corporations benefit from bigotry and rage, and so allow it to fester and grow. They do this by under moderating, or moderating with a bias against the people being harassed and attacked.
So the last thing I would choose to do is go to a platform/network that prides itself on lack of moderation, and requires vulnerable, targeted folk to play whack a mole, with each person having to reactively block individual bigots, one by one, after they’ve appeared and dumped their payload of hate.
Ethically sourced nazi apologism is still nazi apoligism
Perhaps don’t take your advice from an LLM that has been deliberately poisoned with transphobia, racism, nazi apologia and pro billionaire talking points.
LLMs are not truth generators to begin with, but that’s extra so with Grok
Kühn, S., & Gallinat, J. (2014). Brain Structure and Functional Connectivity Associated With Pornography Consumption: The Brain on Porn (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapsychiatry/fullarticle/1874574)
This is the classic “correlation does not equal causation”.
The study quite openly says that they can’t tell from their study whether the differences they found were caused by pornography viewing, or whether they have discovered a precondition that makes someone more likely to enjoy watching pornography.
In addition, it’s unclear exactly what a reduction of grey matter in the right caudate means in real world terms. Body size correlates with grey matter volume, and no one would claim that a smaller person, with a lower volume of grey matter has a “destroyed brain”.
Loss of existing gray matter in that area may not be benign, but we don’t know, because the study doesn’t explore that topic.
Love, T., Laier, C., Brand, M., Hatch, L., & Hajela, R. (2015). Neuroscience of Internet Pornography Addiction: A Review and Update
Hilton, D. L., & Watts, C. (2011). Pornography Addiction: A Neuroscience Perspective
These two articles talk about pornography addiction, which is distinct from pornography consumption. In addition, both of them talk about the harm caused by pornography addiction as being a result of addiction, rather than an inherent aspect of viewing pornography.

Neither!

My kiddo calls me by my first name
I left when it became clear they had no interest in dealing with nazi sympathisers, and when it became clear that transphobia was acceptable, as long as it was “civil”. This was long before the Reddit API exodus
I found lemmy when looking for fediverse/federated Reddit like platforms, and spun up an instance to test it out. It was basically only me on the instance until the Reddit exodus happened, and then suddenly the instance and lemmy add a whole saw a huge growth in traffic.
And then we spun up a piefed instance when it became clear the lemmy devs also hold some shitty beliefs, so that users who wanted an alternative could have one.
I’m not going anywhere. Federated/decentralised social media is the future as far as I’m concerned. At the very least, it’s the only future I’ll consider.

He had plenty of water! Because the container was sealed, it didn’t evaporate off. It just didn’t get replaced, or oxygenated… And I assume he quite happily munched away on the algae for food

Yep. In all seriousness, I’ve never owned fish since then, precisely because of what happened with Dave

This is the story of Dave the fish. We were a group of young students, all around 18 or so.
Dave… My housemate bought a bunch of fish for the house. Cichlids, zebra fish etc. And we also ended up Dave. The pet shop guy threw him in for free, because he didn’t know what type of fish he was. He was a small, generic silver fish, about the size of a zebrafish, but without their colouring.
Anyway, within a day or two of getting the fish tank set up at the house, Dave jumped out of the tank and landed on the floor! He laid on the floor for so long he was partially stiff by the time we found him.
We put him back in the tank, and he sank straight to the bottom without moving. We were looking for the net to get him out of the tank again when his gills started to move. He didn’t move, but he was breathing, so we left him there.
The next day, he was fine, and you wouldn’t have known anything had happened.
Within a year or so, every other fish in that tank died, but not Dave. So when we moved house, someone put him in a glass spaghetti container, with a sealed lid (something like this ) to make it easy to transport him.
When we got there, we put his (sealed) spaghetti container on a shelf, whilst we got the new house sorted out. And we then kinda forget he was there… Months later, while we were moving things around, we discovered this spaghetti container. It was still sealed closed, and so lined with algae, we couldn’t see anything inside the container. And we remembered that was the container we used for Dave, so we opened it up, to clean out whatever remained of Dave.
Except Dave was still alive. Still doing fine. Despite being sealed in a spaghetti jar for months, untouched, unfed, with no water replacement.
By this point, we had started to realise that Dave was unkillable. But his troubles don’t end there… Because our lease on the house ended, and it was time to move again. But this time, we all went our own way, and some of us to another city. But when we talked later, none of us had Dave. He didn’t make it to any of the new places we were all living.
I like to imagine that all these years later, he’s still living quite happily in his spaghetti jar, planning on outliving us all…
Feishin. It’s a navidrome/jellyfin player.
I love it, because it has smart playlists that are actually smart! It lets me create “random” playlists from my music collection, in a way that works for me.
