Cannonical (Ubuntu’s parent developer) is trying to become the Microslop of the Linux world. Just use a fork instead - plenty to choose from.

There is a difference between scheduled update for security patches which the user agrees to on initial setup (and can modify at any time) alongside optional feature updates that are entirely… optional, and shoving feature and security updates automatically on the user regardless if active programs are running, without consent, and not granting an easy opt-out solution.

Technology@lemmy.world•Wine 11 runs Windows apps in Linux and macOS better than everEnglish
195·1 day agoMacOS repeatedly got in my way when trying to run specialist software needed for my work at [organization], because I had the audacity to use an executable not in line with Apple’s walled garden. Additionally, transferring files was a pain in the nuts - so many “mac moments” of files resulting in 0 bytes after drive ejection and repeated permission error messages despite having the appropriate credentials active.
Throw in some minor annoyances with frankly unintuitive UX for general settings and layout configuration, and I was sick of the damn thing by day 3.
Made me miss my old job where I got to smash a vacated lab’s worth of Macs with a sledgehammer. And where I was allowed to bring my own laptop.

4311·1 day agoI still can’t stand the Apple design philosophy no matter how much exposure. Mostly has to do with their “saving the user from themselves” restrictions in their operating systems. I’d rather defang windows instead, even if it takes much longer per machine.

201·2 days agoStorage capacity for datacenters and other data-hungry business operations (think YouTube scale).
Current alternatives don’t reach the same capacity per dollar without caveats (magnetic tape has an incredibly slow seek time and SSDs are too expensive for non-cache usage).
Of course, AI data harvesting is essentially creating artificial (sorry) demand for even more data capacity, and it doesn’t make rational sense for them to use other forms of hardware.
Fun fact - the scale of data involved is so great that Google famously used “sneakernets” (give an employee a backpack of hard drives and tell them to go from A to B) over traditional internet or intranet connections between their larger facilities in the 2010s, because it was faster.

191·2 days agoIt’s better with something like Winboat (virtualized windows container) within your OS than something like Wine. This is the same case for other “We don’t support Linux officially and actively block it because fuck you” productivity applications like Adobe’s suite.
Personally, I moved from Fusion360 to FreeCAD instead, but I haven’t heard anything negative about the Winboat method.

Find a niche that you have insight in that might interest the virtual crowd, such as pointing out small details in art or photos that a layperson might miss that may be part of your interests, such as identifying unique machinery or mentioning what a potential “easter egg” might be referencing. In my experience those comments usually lead to interested people asking for more about the detail or sharing their own interests in the subject. Alternatively, you can also just provide a funny quip or some background knowledge on some random post you found. That works too.
-
Not really, but usually when you just upvote someone they tend to not realize you were the upvoter (although people do appreciate upvotes). Replying thanks usually isn’t problematic, and can brighten someone’s day.
-
Probably? Unless the post has a lot of activity over several days you probably won’t get any engagement other than upvotes/downvotes tho.
-
AI slop, reposts from other websites with visible watermarks or are compressed to high hell, copying a post from one community and posting it to another (just link the post instead).
-
See above, but if it’s in a relevant community, it’s appreciated more often than not :)
-
It’s the internet, and we’re not your parents. That being said, just realize someone may be confused rather than engaging in bad faith with you over a topic, and try to avoid feeding the trolls (just report them or block them when visible). On top of that, usually there is a human on the other end, and we do have a wide range of worldviews here - if you seem to be in a place that doesn’t seem like a friendly place to chat, might be a sign to just leave that community and find an appropriate alternative. (But do try to report obvious bots, AI slop, and people who take things a bit too far).
-
If you are a rookie realize that people will judge you for a young account age, since you could be seen as a bot. Nothing personal. Lurk more, and post when you got something prepared to say :)

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta Reportedly Cutting About 1,500 VR and AR Jobs Amid Renewed Push to Become an AI JuggernautEnglish
32·5 days agoThe index controllers come with integrated finger tracking, the headset displays are higher resolution with better FOV and maximum refresh rates.
Also they’re not meta, which counts for a lot.
The only way I see a Q2 being superior to the index is wireless functionality (which I’ve heard is a situational blessing and curse), and standalone play, which is useless once you need a dedicated PC for any steamVR software (as the games are ran on the PC).

66·5 days agoA used index will probably cost a 3rd of the price of the Steam Frame ATM, just saying. All you have to do is buy a replacement face gasket (which valve sells for like 10 USD, or you can use a more padded aftermarket one).
No need to wait if you’re trying to get a non-meta headset at meta headset prices (since the steam frame bundle will probably have to be at least 700 USD)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you draw the line regarding windows?
31·5 days agoMy user on the internet why the fuck are you using Gentoo for financial applications. There are a multitude of distros with a focus on stable releases rather than being learning tools for masochists (like Debian and derivatives, or Fedora based alternatives).
This sounds like the stories I’ve heard of young kids installing Kali linux and wondering why it’s not working for their everyday tasks.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Where do you draw the line regarding windows?
41·5 days agoIronically you may be better off using linux on your current hardware than the new hardware, since driver support tends to improve with time (the Linux community is known to support hardware long abandoned by the original manufacturers). Bleeding edge (release new) hardware has has less time for the community to work on it, so your experience may be more unstable.

The FreeCAD team have a series of video tutorials on their website alongside a wiki/documentation for individual functions if you’re searching for those.
Also, there is an interface style called “OpenInventor” in the settings that changes the layout of the toolbars into a near-mimic of AutoDesk Inventor, and if you enable the “Blender” 3d modeling style (warning, does take dedicated graphics hardware to run at good speeds), things like plane layouts and rotating the object should match Inventor as well.
