Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What book did you read last and what book are you currently reading? Would you recommend either of those books?English
5·4 months agoLast book: Children of ruin. I didnt really like this one, while i was in awe of the brilliance of Children of time.
Currently reading a non-fiction book called The genius of birds. I already knew from direct experience how smart birds are, including ones that people perceive as dumb, like pigeons. But this book really gives a different perspective in how birds are complex creatures that adapt to their environments in intelligent ways, and how other birds will instantly copy these novel ways.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why do males complain about female-led stories or too many female characters when the majority are still dominated by males?English
3·9 months agoOne of the ways i select a movie or series is by watching the poster. That tells me enough about whether it will be about male heroes and (maybe) female sidekicks or mothers in the kitchen. Particularly american ones have a lot of those movies. So, these i will not even try to watch anymore.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How to avoid arthritis later in life?English
4·10 months agoLots of things already mentioned, but to add: Be careful playing certain sports. Damaging your joints frequently can also lead to osteo arthritis or make it appear earlier.
Stop comparing yourself to others. You are you, and you can’t possibly please or displease everyone anyway

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's something you can't buy ready made, but have to make at home?English
5·10 months agoTrue, but it’s an important reason for many people to start to learn how to make their own clothes. It takes effort, but one can learn how to do this. And it used to be a very common skill. With today’s junk on the market, we have a good enough reason to start learning.

7·11 months agoI do and it’s not even my native language. Even words like there, their, were, where, than and then, i have no issues with. One thing that does confuse me is with names, because that is used differently than my european country.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What seemingly random thing do you vehemently hate?English
84·1 year agoGreeting people or goodbye’s. Please don’t touch me, unless you are my child or pet. I was hoping the new covid habits of not shaking hands or hugging would become permanent, but it’s back again. And i still have this reflex of shaking hands, instead of keeping my hands in my pocket.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•To people who choose not to swear (for non-religious reasons), what is your motivation to be that way ?English
22·1 year agoBecause swear words are, to me, an expression of anger or irritation. Swearing would therefore reinforce angry mindstates.
Yes, this was both very helpful for my mind, i’m happy and calm most of the time, and others appreciate it too and are happy to be around me.
It didn’t stop me from expressing anything. It just makes me pause to think of a better, kinder way to express myself, without making other people angry. It helps communicating with other people in a more friendly, helpful way. When i would be angry, it would be hard to listen to other people.
