  • I guess it depends on the ones in power. There is a theoretical possibility that the ones in power acts altruistically for the good of the people.

History however has proven totalitarian countries as brutal regimes, before it inevitablably collapses.

One of the reasons it can’t be for the good of the people is that it needs to pay supporters a lot more.

If you are a dictator, you have to constantly bribe your supporters (military, oligarchs etc). If you don’t, they will replace you with another dictator that will. So the system will inherently be corrupt and not to the benefit of the people.

Any actions that benefit the people comes from a fear of riots and revolution. In other words it’s a delicate balancing act.

Things might be different now and in the future due to more advanced surveillance, personalized propaganda, drones and robotics. Different in that it can be more oppressive than previously.

  • I agree in principle, society is demonizing nudity and sex. This has got to change. Society needs to change in order to fix this and many other issues related to sex and nudity.

As long as it affects a persons reputation and their standing, this is a problem. Any person can harm someone with this technology, and as a society we can not accept that.

Most people could not make a decent fake sex tape with any person in the world with low effort before. Now they can.

Should creating deepfakes for personal consumption be legal/illegal? Distribution is the real problem. The rest is fantasizing with tools more or less. Some people will understandably not like it if they find out other people fantasize about them, but that is close to thought crime. What is acceptable? Is a stickdrawing with names too much? What if I am really good at realistic drawings? What if I draw many images in a book and make a physical animation of ouf it? Is the limit anything outside my head? What if I draw a politician fellating another one and distribute it as art/satire?

The short term solution is to ban deepfakes, the long term is probably something else, but I am not sure what. There is not inherently any actual abuse in deepfakes, there is no actual sex either. So it’s a reputational/honor and disgust thing. These things still matter a lot in societies, so we can’t ignore it either.

  • I suggest you tell her that this is a problem, and that this is affecting your friendship. That if she does not try to educate herself, that you will have to reconsider the friendship.

Tell her that trans people have something called gender dysphoria. Reference Wikipedia and DSM. Prove that this is a real thing. Just like her autism. The best would probably be to just send her a couple of links with a short, but honest take on how this is a problem for you. Let her read it herself om her own time.

The last thing you should do is let the friendship end without talking to her. Its important to confront people, and give them a chance to change their mind. People deserve that.

  • Free as in freedom, not only free as in beer. That is how FOSS works. Also one of the things I find appealing about it.

By focusing on FOSS being this super serious thing, we kinda lose what is great about it. Everyone is welcome and free to use it as they see fit. That is by design (see licenses). A lot of FOSS is passion projects by people on their spare time, they do it because it is fun / fulfilling. We need all hands on deck, and FOSS should also be playful, experimental, and novel. FOSS is this super idealistic gift to humanity, from humanity. Every piece of FOSS software contributes to the collective human database of ideas and software.

The “us reasonable users” is a really unfortunate way of sharing your opinion on this matter. Is it unreasonable to be a femboy and use FOSS/Linux? By being elitist like this, I kinda get the same reaction you claim to get from this user. I don’t want to be clumped in with the users that feel they are superior to everyone else and acting like it, and gatekeeping the FOSS community and its representation.

  • It depends on how you view the parent/child relationship. In most countries parents have a sort of “ownership” role of their child. A right to raise them in their own way, religion and traditions. It is THEIR child to teach, and raise.

This has become pretty contentious in Norway, and Norway has lost cases child protection cases regarding this in international courts. Our child protection services has taken children from their parents and that has ended up in international courts in some cases. This is due to a difference in opinion in what is acceptable and OK ways to raise a child, and what constitutes the rights of the parents and the rights of the child. In some of these cases Norway have rightfully been convicted. But you won’t lose the ability to raise your child in Norway over nothing, as some people will have you believe. The child protective services can’t explain why to the public, and the parents can pretend to be innocent.

Personally I believe parents do not own their child. I believe parents are in a privileged position and lucky to be allowed to raise a human (yes, also biological), and that the privilege should be revoked if the parents are not sufficiently fit to raise the child.

The perspective of ownership is harmful in my opinion and does often conflict with the interests of the child in my opinion.

Should the child get vaccinated? Yes, exceptions are only allergies.

Should the child be home schooled? No.

Should the child interact with peers at the kindergarten and school and get the social skills they need? Yes

What sorts of punishments are acceptable?

Should the child be heavily involved in religion? No, but should learn about it, and can in a limited degree practice it. But no religious schools, or religious camps. Genital mutilation should not be allowed for boys either. If they want to, they can do it as adults. Doing unnecessary surgery on a defenseless child due to religion is in no way acceptable.

If the parents are neglecting their child, how much neglect is okay before the right/privilege is revoked?

If the parents are addicts, what then?

    Etc.
