Well… I’ve just checked out, and aside from unofficial Edge flatpak, there are official Debian/Ubuntu and Fedora repositories, I just don’t understand why would anyone want to integrate spyware web browser into their system.

Mint is great! I use Debian personally, but I really like Linux Mint and Cinnamon desktop. I think it’s a great fit for a lot of people who just want normal computer experience. Also there’s a misconception that Linux Mint is only for beginners, and while a lot of people migrate to some other distro eventually, staying with Mint is fine even if you want to learn Linux more deeply at some point.

Apple actually have shown that they can make cheap computers like Macbook Neo, but I doubt they want to make computers that allow freedom of Linux, hell even Windows. Gaming is also non-existent on Macbooks, because for some they want to use their own graphics API (Metal), although some kind of a translation layer (MoltenVK) exists, but I have no idea how good it is.

There will be always a workaround, because Windows NT was originally built with local accounts in mind and the whole system’s architecture is based on that. Even if they block every possible way to do that using their official installation media, someone will just create a custom disc image, some script or whatever that you will be able to use to have a local account.

I think you should let the kid just use variety of systems and desktops over time. It’s fine if it likes something different than you in the end as well, and there’s a chance that they will like GNOME more if they are more used to mobile UI’s.

I mean I don’t really recommend Linux like a lot of people do. I just mention it when it’s appropriate and give a list of its drawbacks and benefits, according to specific use case. For home users I just say that Linux Mint or Zorin OS are fine and even better that Windows for this scenario, but I must be honest and also say that something like ChromeOS might be even better if an user spends their whole time in a web browser.

For professional usage (except coding lol) I never recommend or even mention Linux for variety of reasons.

Sure, but that’s a bad excuse. 16 GB is a standard even in low end nowadays.

Why what? Why Debian? Why Nvidia? Or White Nvidia 550 drivers?

• Why Debian: Because I am most familiar with Debian-based distros, and I don’t generally need latest stuff for anything. I really wanted to familiarize myself with the base for other distros, and I am fine with it.

• Why Nvidia: Because I chose Nvidia when I built my computer (it was running Windows 10 at that moment) and I never upgraded it, and given that I don’t have integrated graphics on my system I am stuck with it, unless I upgrade.

• Why Nvidia 550 drivers: Because these are the drviers that are in the latest Debian release (13 - trixie) and I don’t want to break my system by installing experimental drivers or official ones from Nvidia. I also only have problems on Wayland Plasma session where HW accelerated apps and games have big graphical issues, but relogging to X11 session is fine for now. I don’t really play video games, except retro and indie stuff anyway.

I am on Debian with Nvidia 550 drivers… yeah.

I like GUI’s, but I prefer them simple and customizable, so I eventually want to switch away from KDE Plasma to just some window manager.

OpenBSD

I use Debian on my desktop PC and laptop and OpenBSD on the other laptop.

I am both a chad and schizo.

OpenBSD is pretty cool.

On Linux you can indeed install old apps. You will just need to spend few hours doing so… or use Flatpak I guess.

I use Debian GNU/Linux ftw.

Like a month ago, someone wanted to connect my laptop to a projector in university class to show presentation. Little did I know that after connecting HDMI cable I will have a black screen on my laptop, lol.

If I knew my laptop is going to be used in such way I would prepare, but still…
