We’re competing with “it’s already installed” though, not installing Windows from scratch.
Installing any OS is a huge step up for most people.
The real change comes when manufacturers start giving the choice of pre-installed OS. Some already do but they are pretty niche (e.g. Steam Deck).

Plus everything better work perfecly out of the box on any hardware, and there is a lot of different hardware. Compatibility layers are often built into the package.
Java, for instance, recommenda that you package the whole (albeit slimmed down) JVM inside the package for the target platform, rather than relying on the java runtime installed already.

I think people don’t want specialised tools, they want one tool they can always have with them. We can see the decline of computer use (and literacy) as a consequence of this. Many young people don’t use computers much, if at all.
