There are a lot of people who grew up loving the books but strongly oppose funding the author now that she’s made transphobia a central part of her identity. Assuming one is OK with piracy, I don’t see the conflict in wanting to play the game for free.

I’m still baffled by the time she swiftly cracked DRM on Hogwarts Legacy, making it easy for critics of JK Rowling’s transphobia to play without giving her a dime… but then filled the release notes with a transphobic/anti-woke rant. Girl, what?

It’s a two step process: a majority of the House must vote to impeach, then the Senate has a trial where you need a two-thirds majority to convict and remove them from office. House Democrats actually impeached Trump twice in his first term when they had the majority (once for blackmailing Ukraine, and again after the January 6th attack), but Republicans in the Senate blocked conviction.
Right now, Republicans have the majority in both the House and the Senate, so there’s not even a chance of impeachment, much less conviction.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What AI tools have you found useful?English
1·6 months agoI have – I had high hopes for it, but the vocals are still pretty bad. They all have this metallic, tinny quality, liked they’re subtly vocoded or being sung into those little toy spring microphones for kids. It’s a constant reminder that it’s artificial and just completely takes me out if it.

2·6 months agoI don’t know how Suno has become so much more popular than Udio. Every Suno track I’ve heard has sounded like the same generic pop, and the vocals always have this noticeable “synthy” quality.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your favorite games that you never see mentioned anywhere?English
61·8 months agoDuring lockdown I played ECHO, which had been in my backlog for a few years after a stray recommendation I saw on MetaFilter. It was a surprisingly tight integration of beautiful and intriguing environmental/UI/sound design, gorgeous music, compelling yet minimalist storytelling (and voice acting), and a really strong gameplay loop of stealth, puzzle-solving, and the occasional panicky run-and-gun. Imagine my surprise when I read up on it after and learned it only sold a few thousand copies!
I strongly recommend playing it blind, but this trailer gives a good overview of the style and mechanics.

6·8 months agoOne of the greatest games of all time from a design and gameplay perspective. There’s a reason it’s in the MoMA. The soundtrack is an all-timer as well.
I wonder if this would include on-screen notifications.

3·11 months agoIn retrospect, I think the rise of smartphone-based, algorithm-driven social media circa 2012 will be seen as the information-age equivalent of lead poisoning that quietly brainrotted society. It greatly increased the power and reach of disinformation and radicalizing propaganda while destroying the ability of mainstream news sources to moderate or even alert people to the damage being done. There’s a staggering gap in attitudes between people who get their news from social media apps vs. newspapers or even cable TV. And so much of the maliciousness is below the surface, distributed across millions of unique newsfeeds and “for you” pages that the public writ large has very little insight into. If some shell company were airing neonazi recruitment ads on national television, people would be shocked and outraged, but slip it into the feeds of vulnerable people and you can poison an entire generation with hardly anyone noticing until it’s too late.
