I had a Radio Shack computer in the early 80’s. When I sent in the warranty card, my address ended up on nerd mailing lists. Compuserve was the only public ISP and access cost $7 and hour IIRC plus it was a long distance call around 50 cents a minute (ask your grandparents). I was able to access the internet for free at public libraries. Had no idea what I was doing but managed to see weather predictions and access Nexus which was a digitized database of periodicals (magazines).

Set aside a cardboard box for stuff you haven’t used in years but you’d hate to throw away because it’s still useful. When the box fills up, drop it off at the thrift store and get another box
Hikermick@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It's Father's Day in the United States. What is a memory of your father that left the greatest impact on your life?2·18 days agoI’ll never forget being around 12 years old and hearing my dad address another adult by Mr+surname. It was Mr Palmer who organized the little league I grew up playing in and my dad coached. In school we were forced to address teachers and staff as Ms, Mrs or Mr but at that instance I realized treating others with respect is a choice
I too use stock for making food for my dogs. I’ll also make jello treats, it’s cheap, they love it, it’s really good for them.
Did you get the 1200 baud modem?

Not the exercises I was given but this video gets the idea across https://youtu.be/fgKHFLe654U

Pulling out is easy. If I have to back out I don’t have such a good view. Yeah I get a look as I approach my car but by the time I sit down, click my seat belt, start the car, someone i didn’t see could be coming along.
This one is from nearly 30 years ago. In my dream I’m approached by 2 policemen who tell me my father has been killed and they need me to come with them for questioning. I’m 100% sure my father is alive and this is all a misunderstanding. I get in the back of their police car laughing that it’s all a waste of time but whatever, no worries. As the car is rolling along I’m looking out the windows as the landscape gradually changes. First it was all tall pine trees then became rocky, then nothing but rocks. While still moving it all fades away and the car disappears and I’m flying. The only other thing I remember is seeing a bird flying with me. It’s a bird I’ve never seen before even though I’m a bit of a backyard birder. There were teardrop shaped things trailing behind it’s wings as if attached by strings. Truly unusual looking. I wake up in the morning and I’m convinced I was tricked into leaving my body by these men claiming to be policemen. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, someone posts video of a nightjar. A nocturnal bird that looks just like the one in my dream! https://youtu.be/8XqqlC_MoWk

Apparently you’re the only one. Fox New’s Half Hour News Hour didn’t last long. https://youtu.be/KCl_--E3T2c It was their attempt to copy The Daily Show and even the title was recycled. It didn’t last long
It’s always cringy when “the right” can’t come up with an original idea so they imitate something successful on “the left” and swap out words and think it’ll get anywhere

A large magnet. I bought it on a whim ~20 years ago for $20 (still online for same price). I got it on a whim while buying gifts from an educational toy website. It comes in handy whenever I drop something small that ferrous or just need it to hold onto things.
