Can confirm. There are lots of “boring” videos on Loops. Like, check this out. Yes, it’s an entire channel dedicated to chickens. I mean, it’s nice and relaxing, but nowhere near as addicting and engaging as tiktok or instagram videos. I’ll still count that as a win.

Before the app was released, I noticed that suddenly there were many new users. Previously, making an account wasn’t open to everyone, but apparently that has changed too.

No shortage of trash, but that’s true for all platforms.

I just used the customize button on the top right corner and moved politics and a bunch of other junk to the “hide” column. This way, the home feed has a chance of containing things worth watching. Mostly though, I just use Odysee for watching the few channels I care about. Incidentally, I arranged the “followed” section to the top of the list.

As a result, I don’t see any conspiracy or MAGA nonsense at all.

Peertube for long tech videos. You’ll find lots of linux people here. Sure, there’s pretty much everything else too, but that’s what I use Peertube for.

Odysee for a wide range of videos in general. Many youtubers have backed up their videos here.

USA is sliding into lawless chaos, much like most of Africa already has. Would you invest in Sudan or Congo? No you wouldn’t. Who knows what the local dictator decides to do with your assets. If you own a company there, who knows what will happen to your employees. If laws don’t matter, there’s no predictability or certainty. When there’s uncertainty, investors see that as elevated risk.

Many investors also have ethical requirements (ESG), so investing in war, gambling and porn is usually out the question. This also applies to governments involved in human rights violations, such as USA.

Sorting by scaled helps a little bit, but some communities just post soooo much that they drown out everything else. In order to fix that you would need “multireddits”, which don’t exist on Lemmy.

For the time being, I recommend making two accounts and using one exclusively for subscribing to the really busy communities. The other one could be used for everything else. It’s also an opportunity to try out a different instance.

If you find that one feed is getting dominated by a single community again, you may need to create a third account to manage your subscriptions appropriately.

What if there was a federated platform for supporting the channels you like? Maybe something like Patreon? Or how about some sort of merch store for people who can sell the things they make?

Sounds like there’s also a lot of potential for soviet style gulags, forced labor camps, or basically just slavery. If that’s what USA is offering, many dictatorships would probably be glad to make a deal. Once USA figures out how to have gulgas on their own soil, the expenses will suddenly vanish entirely.

But isn’t that also a very expensive way to murder people? How can they afford a massive system like that?

All of them have at least one. Usually it’s 2-4 emojis per post, but some have way more. Seems like a deliberate marketing tactic.

Economies of scale play a role too, and China certainly has that. Neglecting the environment and employee rights aren’t really a big deal in there, but in Germany they are. On top of that, there are also big differences in living standards, which is reflected in the wages. All of that stacked together, and you end up with massive price differences.

You need to add more slavery and exploitation to the production method to make it cheaper.

I get my American slang through Hollywood and Internet, so the curriculum may not be entirely comprehensive at times.
