I think a lot of people have a few killer apps that just don’t work on Linux even with WINE. Hell, I’ve heard that VR is not worth it on Linux. There are edge cases like that, that need to be sorted some way. Hopefully whatever Valve is doing wrt their supposed standalone VR headset helps there.

Honestly I love the Steam Deck for getting Linux into people’s hands in a way that’s easy and Just Works :tm:. They’ve not replaced the OS on their Steam Deck at all, which is a win not just for Valve but the Linux ecosystem as a whole.

Though, the only issue my friends has had is transferring files to and from the Steam Deck if their main PC runs Windows or Mac. There are a multitude of varyingly convenient options but all of my friends have literally just plugged an external hard drive through the sole USB-C port lol. Linux has to cater to people who won’t even install third-party drivers.

I was thinking on moving to Fedora, since it has more robust support for GUI-based installation through PackageKit and it’s got a more stable release cycle. But Arch and its wiki is just my bread and butter at this point that moving to another distro feels foreign and annoying in comparison, even though it’s not the distro’s fault.

Now it could be avoided by checking PKGBUILDs and I can trust that the reader is checking those (are you, reader? 🤨). But do you have that trust for every user?

I prefer Void Linux’s way of handling packages, where it all goes through one ultimately trusted git repo that gets packaged up if the license allows it, otherwise using xbps-src. If it was a bit less DIY compared to Arch I’d be hopping onto it tbh.

I used Ubuntu, during the GNOME 2 + Compiz days. God I wish for those days to have a comeback. I’ve kept a bit of an eye on Wayfire for that reason.

I used it after getting frustrated with the AUR. Never looked back unless the package wasn’t on Flatpak or had an AppImage.

I’ll probably do that when Plasma 6 hits their main repos. I’m trying it on Arch and so far, I’m well pleased with it.

I feel the Arch devs and TUs can be quite helpful, but the users spreading the gospel can be the opposite sometimes. I remember a user saying Arch won’t implement PackageKit because it was shit, but the actual reason from a developer was that PackageKit doesn’t really work with rolling release distributions like Arch.

Yeah I’m looking at that as well. Friend of mine does say if you want to do full-body tracking the Quest is a pain to do it with, but I’m not deep in PCVR right now haha.

I’m thinking on buying a Quest to dip into PCVR. I’ve heard horror stories about the Index’s poor QC (which is weird given the Steam Deck’s done me well so far) and PSVR2 isn’t compatible with PC. Yes, iVRy exists but that driver is in development and the developer basically said “just buy a Quest if you want a cheap PC VR headset”.

I miss the old splash screens with the shiny progress bar, tbh.

Yeah, even less nerdy people hate that. I’ve had friends who aren’t well-versed in fediverse/Linux culture complain about ROM hacks in particular doing this.

I think another hinderance is that the people asking questions get ignored, dismissed or shouted at, even if they tried whatever it was they tried. The Linux community doesn’t do this as much when someone who tried Linux runs back to Windows, thankfully, but if you’re a Chromium user who tried Firefox, or a Bluesky user who tried fedi, and found that the former of those was better for your needs, prepare to have angry nerds flaming you for your blasphemous act.

There have been projects that skin Lemmy to be like a forum, based on phpBB code if I recall. Don’t think the projects are active though.

I’ve only got anecdotal stories but I have heard from my friends that ROM hack projects do this and I personally don’t get it. If it’s to hide from the big N, Discord won’t back you there. Just teach your users how to use patch files instead.
