yeah it does but i dont think the people are the problem. Reddit has been around long, its a for profit company. It exploded in popularity at a time when there was no competition and now its entrenched itself as a dominate site that will be almost impossible to kill.

You do realize the entire format of reddit is designed to make “echo chambers”. Every single reddit sub is an echo chamber and users have no options. At least here people can do what they want with no one to tell them how to run their community.

The only way to stop it from being a commission echo chamber is to push back or post the opposite stuff. They don’t run many of the communities here like they do on reddit. The good thing about lemmy is getting downvoted doesn’t restrict your usage of the site so you can make unpopular opinions without getting timed out like on reddit.

Mastodon could have perfect UI and still lose to bluesky. Normal people don’t trust foss and mastodon has no advertising budget.

I really think we need a monitored internet for under 13s. The internet is just to fucked up at the moment. I never thought I would be someone advocating for this because i grew up on the wild west internet watching people getting beheaded and stuff. But all that is nothing compared to being bombarded with friendly, trustworthy (seeming) people that constantly spread lies and misinformation that shapes your world view.

I dont think critical thinking is enough. If you apply critical thinking to a media landscape full of lies you will still come out wrong.

You could argue a state has a right to propagandize its own citizens to counter foreign adversarial influence. I’m not saying it does but a state should have its populations best interests in mind compared to a foreign adversary.

Youre gonna have to write fully cited and sourced academic papers to convince him to clean his room.

My younger sister searches tiktok for information and by that I mean she doesn’t even use the search feature. The topics just show up in her feed. She thinks she’s choosing/finding but is actually getting fed topics.

Its sad because everytime she tells me something she learned on tiktok I do like 2mins of research and find its not true or misleading. People lie about the most mundane things on that platform and I don’t know why.

Prefer nothing but if I do need something I always go for conventional. If it’s bad enough that I need medicine I want something that actually works.

Telling people “don’t ever fucking mention another issue when a women is talking” is stupid. The more comments we get on lemmy the better. The more discussion the better. The medium allows discussion to fork without derailing anything. So if people want to respond to that comment and discuss then nothing is taken away from any of the other comments in this thread and people who don’t care can just minimize that comment and all the rest in that comment thread.
