I’m not sure I ever really believed a big fat man would slide down our chimney to deliver presents on his sleigh. The fantasy of it was fun though. For me it was a pretty smooth transition to not doing Santa stuff.

Like I said, how can you prove that free will exists now? We could very well already live in your scenario, and the world isn’t ending because of a lack of free will (if it doesn’t exist). I mean, it is ending, but not because of free will or the lack thereof.
Why are we assuming they’d want to optimize it? If they went through the trouble of simulating the entire universe, they probably either have a particular goal in mind, or have such a ludicrously large amount of resources that it doesn’t matter.
There’s no functional difference, unless you can accurately predict someone’s actions, and to do that you’d need to predict the environment in which someone is making choices as well, which requires omniscience. So, there’s no functional difference.

Step 1 is determining what kinds of projects you want to make and selecting a language and/or libraries that will help you do that. Eg. if you want to code for the web, there’s JS. Then you can follow tutorials, and/or jump into making small projects.
