  • While I’m happy with this outcome, even if it’s only temporary, I disagree with calling it “Hungary’s push”. There are multiple countries supporting this initiative and phrases like this make it easy for them to wash their hands and push the whole responsibility on a country everyone is pissed at anyway.

We shouldn’t hide the fact there’s a growing interest in limiting human rights among EU countries but rather expose and scrutinize the bad actors instead. I don’t think that will stop any future attempts but it could hopefully slow them down.

Still, win is a win and every attempt that fails is a reason to celebrate.

  • Here are some possible reasons for people getting mad if you’re really wondering why it happens:

    • unsolicited advice can make people feel stupid (you love to learn, not everyone does)
    • comments like yours can be used as a way of making fun of OP to disregard their point without actually interacting with it
    • being corrected on a slip up and not something you sincerely don’t know can be annoying (either towards the person correcting you or towards yourself for “not knowing something this simple”)
    • I don’t know about others but my school life never taught me how to deal with criticism, if you made a mistake you didn’t study properly and should go back to doing that instead of being explained what went wrong and why (this one might sound a worse than it really was but you get the point)

I’m not saying you did any of those things and I’m right there with you on learning but the knee-jerk reactions often do have a reason behind them. There’s also the whole issue with how polarized social media is these days and the willingness to listen or admit to a mistake can be a difficult thing to stomach (“it’s a sign of weakness”).

    I hope that helps!

  • People are willing to deal with a lot of thing before it gets to a breaking point - whether it’s a social media platform or anything else in life. Change is scary and many users keep their accounts to follow specific artists/series/topics who may or may not have easily findable alternatives to switch to.

Add the fact that majority of casual users doesn’t know about other similar platforms or (in case of fediverse) finds them confusing and suddenly they have more incentive to just put up with the problems as long as they can. More so since such change requires rebuilding of communities and relationships.

Finally, there’s laziness - most people just can’t be bothered to change things in their life unless they have no other choice/choice was made for them (ex. service they used died).

Why do you think so many refused to leave reddit after the whole boycott drama? It sucks but that’s how humans are. There’s only so much we can care about and social media aren’t exactly high on the totem pole.
