I see the value in disks if you’re into collecting the physical pieces, but if you’re not into that, I don’t find it a good way to own - for me that would be useless pieces of plastic occupying space. Very much not for everyone.

I find buying DVDs just to rip the contents impractical anyway. If I were concerned with ethics - I’d likely do like I do with Steam games and buy a DRMed version corresponding to my DRMless download. Because I’d rather not deal with a disk taking up space or needing to be disposed of, not to mention potential scarcity if it is no longer in print.

Agree on Blu-Ray. Also, weren’t there region restrictions?

Streaming will never be a satisfying model for me - I need ownership and lack of DRM.

You can own DRMless media instead. BluRay was already more restrictive than DVD, from what I understand.

But getting a DVD just to rip it is very inconvenient. Not only can there be scarcity issues with out-of-print disks, but also you’d either deal with the disks you never use lying around, throw them out or bother reselling, which I’d prefer not to do. I’d prefer having just hard drives of my media.

I use TOTP in KeepassXC (or KeepassDX on mobile) because it’s fully local and available for desktop.

• Learn to treat a Windows PC or a non-degoogled phone as a fundentally unprivate device and learn to not trust them with personal things (if I were a parent, I’d install a privacy-preserving OS on a device prior to giving it to a kid anyway)

I got the impression that they like crypto as an industry, not as a tool. I doubt they would guarantee safety for, as an example, KYC-less Monero exchangers.

I do see that appeal, because we have already seen that surveilled KYC transactions are undesirable in many situations, like if you’re making a donation to a dissident. While indeed, crypto cannot scale enough to be a primary method of payment - it still needs to be there as an alternative pathway.

The energy usage was criticized not in absolute terms, but in relation to the numbers of transactions. Cryptocurrencies are criticized for consuming more energy while being much lower in volume.

That said, we do need projects like Monero now. At least at the present moment, it is the closest we have to “digital cash”.

That would only really work on mobile, though - and that’s assuming the OS isn’t custom.
