Google doesn’t care what end users scream about (such as YouTube ads) but I have a feeling some lawyers had an emergency meeting to explain why this was a crap idea.
I feel like this change is here to stay for a while.

Haha! Darn autocorrect. Thanks for catching that.
“Oh no, those poor ticket buyers. How can we make this right?”
A fit of laughter washed over the C-level executive suite as hardened stoic expressions melt under the absurdity of the line.
For the Ticketmaster empire has fulfilled its purpose once again; to draw out the anger, to be the hated, to consume and regurgitate the evils and greeds of the land.
Lunch is delivered, and that was the last thought on the matter for the day. Talk of vacation homes and weekend yacht excursions permiate the walls; yellowed ever so slightly over the decades.
The delivery driver sulks away, untipped, from the lions den as their phone buzzes with a new notification.

“Oh, shit. What this time?”
You have to register an account with the 3rd party service ID.me that uses biometrics like facial recognition. Their privacy policy is horrendous.
The only reason I haven’t used it this year.
Just spitballing, but a new part number means new variations to account for, new testing, new code, new hardware (balance/charge rate/cooling system), and new safety verification.
It’s cheaper to hire a lawyer and programmer to screw a customer than a team of engineers to appease government.
Reminds me of CD/DVD drives. Manufacturers build/test one model, and make 3 firmwares with software limits to market to low, middle, and high price users. All models make profit, but segmenting the market gets those who can pay a little more. The advanced users buy the cheapest drives and reflash them with the best firmware to restore function.
A lot of the infrastructure is provided to ISP’s free for local caching/deployment. Netflix has the Open Connect program to greatly relieve stress on interconnects and backbones.
If memory serves, ISP didn’t like this and would rather profit from fees for the internet traffic. I feel like those fees and licensing fees account for a significant increase in subscription costs.
OMG what if Google moves to India/Mexico permanently and is subject to the TikTok ban.
Oh, I can dream. Haha!
At first, Pi-hole was enough, but some devices had a software update a year or two ago that used Google (if memory serves) DNS as a backup. It was sneaky, but adding a block rule closed that loophole.
Not all devices had that change though. I’m hoping mine is old enough to be ignored for the new video ads.
Currently, yes and no.
Yes, in that pihole can filter ad servers, but no because backup DNS servers are hard coded in the software; you have to block those too from your router.
Not sure about the new changes planned.
“Oh shit, what’s happening? NO NO NO!”
Yup, can confirm.
In the states, that’d be a Big Fucking HIPAA Violation
Is it though? If memory serves, users willfully providing medical info isn’t a breach, unlike if they accessed that info directly from the doctor.
I still recommend Brother printers, but some MFC-* models do support/enforce OEM lock-in after firmware updates according to reports. All the info is 2 years old and I so want to be wrong on this. Have they reversed that decision? Firmware update disables 3rd party toner
I just advised a business on a tech proposal, including printers, and the bid quoted one of the lock-in models. Of course it’s a company so toner is a business expense and they arn’t pinching pennies, but the owner is with the us in not supporting this decision. Props to them.
I quite literally just bought this yesterday! Of course it happens now.
That’s the conclusion I’ve arrived at for my next tv. I’ve had it with ads and tracking sneaking into everything so I looked up dumb TV’s. There were a few, and some I liked were business-only (that’s dumb) so I’ll get a cheap smart TV and never connect it to the internet.
I’m working on a Raspberry Pi for media and “smarts” but haven’t been thrilled with what I got working yet.
PG&E: let’s shut down 3.7GW of power generation; solar should cover everything.
Oh it doesn’t? Raise the rates! More profit!
The CEO gets what, $10M annual now?
I really like those “Protected by Xfinity/AT&T” signs in the windows.
Tells me what wire to cut.

Still have to buy/register a domain name, and I’m assuming in this case, it’s through a particular organization that doesn’t like that kind of stuff.
So if every photo of a Galaxy S24 is a fake AI composition, does that mean nothing could be copyrightable or used as evidence?
Those will be fun days in court!
It’s the font size.
That is the issue.
I’m not a fan of some of Elon’s behavior, but I’ll acknowledge the successes he and his companies have made.
But when have software updates, remote software updates at that, warranted the recall badge of shame. What do you want owners to do, take off the tinfoil hat for their cars?
Change the font size and push the patch. Sheesh. We don’t need an article CBS and the front won’t fall off.
Price is definitely important, but so is traction. If stopping distance increases because eco materials grip less, that would be a concern.
My criteria are performance results, wear rating, and price.
