On the thinking though, might there be any legal argument for unreasonable search and seizure? Yes there’s not expectation of privacy in public, but an officer might still be expected to have a warrant or at least probable cause before searching my car in a Walmart parking lot without my consent.

Sure I don’t expect privacy from Walmart’s security system, but I don’t have reason to think law enforcement is monitoring it at all times. 24/7 law enforcement surveillance seems like it should fall under “search” there, because unless you have reason to be watching me, you’re searching for something anyway.

And officers have literally been caught literally stalking people without warrant with these systems. How is that not unreasonable search?

So yes, there’s no expectation that the public should look the other way, but I should be able to expect to not have big brother looking over my shoulder at all times.

Well that’s good news, but he’s still immorally rich and in need of taxation.

One thing that makes this all difficult is the size and fragmentation of America. American states are the size of European countries and separated by subculture and geography. Organizing a state to hold its state government accountable might be doable in some states, but holding the federal government accountable is fifty times harder at least. Then there’s coordinating messaging and organizing across states. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it’s no small feat. The will of the American people moves in slower, more inexorable tides.

Remind people that every time you go on Instagram it’s like having Zuck in your living room peering over your shoulder writing down every tiny thing you do. His motive is to profit off all that and he may or may not keep that notebook safe. It may not be criminal, but would you really want it to get out that you watched that video again?

Big thing for me is the fediverse part. More privacy, no tracking or ads. People are people, but less corporate power tripping is a win.

No, I’ll agree with you in general, but I would also say that both sides are generally working for billionaires and operate generally as neoliberal parties. Biden even proudly confessed his capitalist convictions.

I don’t disagree that if this last election had gone differently we’d be in a different probably better position, but I also don’t think we have universal healthcare. Plenty more nuance to that than will fit in a comments section, but yes I agree but there’s a lot more to it and people hear democratic promises but don’t often see democratic action.

But also at this point it’s becoming less two neoliberal parties and more the neoliberal party and the fascist party, so yes I’ll 100% take the neoliberal over the fascist.

I think that’s a big reason many Americans don’t vote. It’s not really a choice, just the perception of a choice and the spectacle of a contest.
