yeah no, I can’t really disagree with that. I also don’t feel like re-watching any of his movies - in fact i was interrupted in the middle of Oppenheimer, and don’t even feel like finishing it

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would it take for you to switch to Linux?English
1·2 days agoI’ve used old computers for phasing out certain social networks - e.g. I’d block Facebook on my main computers, and only access it on my old laptop. That’s been quite effective. You could do that, and just use Linux Mint or Xubuntu on that old laptop. Very real learning necessary, and you do manage to break it somehow, it’s not a big deal.

5·2 days agoFor me, as someone who’s not into esports-games, I just expect games to work on Linux now, and they nearly always do. The exception has been a couple of old or obscure titles that run fine in a virtual machine. I’m not running any fancy version of Linux, just Mint, and the only thing I do to get them to work, is install them on Steam. Proton is amazing.
If you are into esports-games, though, there’s a risk that they’ll require kernel-level anticheat, and Linux does not do that.
Exactly. And the style, while it’s pretty and cool looking, works together with the paper-thin characters to give this introspective muffled and artificial feel to all of his works.
I kind of find the gimmicks to be the most enjoyable parts of his movies. They’re also very pretty.
Good question, it’s a lot easier to be negative. I enjoy Tarantino movies, A more high brow movie I liked is The Act of Killing, I liked the HBO series The Deuce, ehm… this is hard.
Nolan movies are mid

Technology@lemmy.world•Discord delays global age verification rollout after backlash - DexertoEnglish
1·14 days agoYeah, I’ll have to work on my explanation there as well.
As I understand it, Matrix is a standard for doing Discord-like things (and other stuff as well, but never mind that), but it’s also an organization that hosts a service that follows that standard - you can make an account there, and use whatever client you like to join servers and do Discord-like things.
But anyone could host such a service, or make such clients, so a big tech firm could never fully own Matrix - in the same way that they can never fully own email.
Sound right?
Not only that, but a lot of constructive thinking goes in to just formulating thoughts so they can be communicated. We’ve all had that sense of “that sounds stupid when I say it out loud”, for example.

1·18 days agoOh, just a ban on the targeting. The companies would still be alllowed to show as many ads, and as many different ads, as they’d want.

8·20 days agoWhen I was 19 I went to a sort of social pedagogy boarding school thing that we have in the Nordics, after that I got drafted and did alternative service, after that my brother had long since moved into my room, so moving back home wasn’t really on the table – at least not as I saw it.

10·22 days agoSome of it can be accomplished by just setting universal demands for how social media works for all users:
- ban targeted advertising
- make it mandatory for companies to ensure algorithms don’t prioritize posts for making users angry, scared or depressed
Stuff like that. These kinds of regulations don’t involve ID checks, and could take care of a big chunk of the problem.

Yeah, that does suck. I usually check GOG first for a Linux version, and if it doesn’t exist I buy the game on Steam.
