You can read your student code, most of them do not have anything that compels you to use the services that are provided. If that is the case, refuse to use the service and make your position known, they’ll generally give you a workaround or if they say that’s how it is, you can ask for the part of the student code with the nonexistent objective reason why you must use it.

Matrix has its benefits, but it is not a 1:1 replacement for discord, for one thing they still haven’t figured out audio screen sharing. If privacy is your thing, it is also a mixed bag since jitsi is not e2ee while the fluxer video calls are. For my use case fluxer is preferable for less tech savvy people or people who want e2ee video calls, & matrix is good for e2ee chat messages, both have their place, & I use both where their strengths shine

I also wasn’t making any judgments based on legislation, since a decent amount of their justifications are “nuclear bad”, I will grant you that it is a considerable hurdle in most places of the world. This is also why I chose not to factor in the fact that nuclear fuel is generally also very useful for weapons which is another large political hurdle. Nuclear fission is the current cleanest way of generating on demand power, assuming you aren’t able to build a water based powerplant. If done correctly they can be built in such a way that they inherently fail in a state that renders them inert. I’m not all too familiar with the process, but that last time I looked, with proper refining of spent fuel, the waste was 10% or less than the original fissionable material.

There is a reason why the arch community had such a bad reputation when it came to newcomers, they were gate keeping good technical knowledge of the system. I find the easy arch distros to be fairly interesting since my recommendation has always been that anyone who wants to daily drive an arch distro should install arch through command line at least once and read about the packages they use.
