16·1 month agoAnd now SSD and hard drive prices. Keep your tech going, it’s going to be a long few years, if ever, before affordability returns. They (cloud and AI tech-holes) want local compute and storage to be unaffordable so we use their crap. F-ck that, I’m gonna scavenge whatever I can to keep self-hosting to the bitter end.

Technology@lemmy.world•NSA is sabotaging cryptographic standards to weaken it. Act now to stop it.English
24·1 month agoSure, but lots of people thought it was crazy conspiracy thinking that the NSA backdoored certain
Elliptic CurvesCSPRNGs years ago… yet it turned out they in fact did, and successfully, and it took years to come out. Whether or not some ‘threat model’ applies to the situation. The chances of a normal person being targeted by some obscure NSA backdoor is very low, certainly; but that doesn’t refute the historical fact that they do try to subvert standards processes.

3·1 month agohttps://warehouse23.com/basement by Steve Jackson Games was hours of fun back when it existed. Think of the giant warehouse at the end of ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ (SyFy also ripped the idea off in the show ‘Warehouse 13’).

23·2 months agoAnd that’s why they’re trying underhanded tactics to inflate earnings and IPO directly into the index funds, so every American’s 401K will legally have to rebalance and invest in them. They’re racing to fleece retirement funds before the bubble bursts.
Not financial advice, of course :p but people should really consider getting their stuff out and into self-directed funds or whatever it is US people do to not depend on auto-allocated funds.

2·3 months agoOw. That sounds horrible. I’m glad I’d never heard of it then, I guess. :(
I’m at the age now where I actually feel relieved if I hear news that Hollywood has decided not to go ahead with a prequel, remake, ‘re-imagining’, or whatever… and I purposefully avoid now the ones that sound like they’re going to be a disaster.

16·3 months agoMax Headroom could work, IFF they went full-bore with the mockery of media, corporatism-as-government and cynical view of advertising. Though the desolation inside and outside the cities and the plight of ‘blanks’ might hit too close to home nowadays as it’s pretty much a literal reality now.
