I’m inclined to agree. I hate AI, and I especially hate artists and other creatives being shafted, but I’m increasingly doubtful that copyright is an effective way to ensure that they get their fair share (whether we’re talking about AI or otherwise).

I don’t feel good about this. I used to be heavily in favour of assisted dying rights, but I fear that disabled people who have been failed by the system will end up going down this path. I’ve seen examples of it happen in Canada. I have very little trust in the UK’s health and social care system at the moment, because as a country, we don’t seem to care about actually supporting people.

Only a couple. I can imagine that “the user is not the enemy” may be a difficult sentiment for some people with heavily user-facing roles. I really love how Technology Connections is just living his best life, being so iconically nerdy that he has masses of adoring fans, despite the topics he covers being so ostensibly dull. I remember scoffing when I first stumbled across him; I thought “a 40+ minute video on [boring stuff I didn’t care about] — who would watch that?”. I think I probably started watching it with the expectation that after a few moments my disdain would be validated, and I’d move on. As it happens, I was enchanted by the magic of “passionate nerd explains something in depth”.

This is also useful as a visual cue for “the dishwasher is finished and needs to be unloaded”. My ADHD means that visual cues like this are super helpful

I think it’s plausible that there are more people here that are neurodivergent. However, even more significant than this is a culture where neurodivergent people are more visible. At Reddit, calling someone or something autistic would usually be an insult. Here, it’s more often that we are recognising each other and existing in solidarity.

I was going to say “bit of both”, but I realise this is complicated by how long I was on Reddit; the culture and experience over there changed over time. I wonder whether the parts of Lemmy that remind me of Reddit are invoking my earlier experiences

I like that having a controller gives me more versatility in my seating position when gaming. At my desk, I can use either the controller or mouse and keyboard. If I get tired in that position, the long wire on my controller means I can sit elsewhere and play (my desk is positioned such that I can just rotate my monitor and play it from my sofa if I want).

I also enjoy that a controller is more portable than my mouse and keyboard for playing games on my laptop when away from home.

I share your frustration. I went nuts about this the other day. It was in the context of searching on a discord server, rather than Google, but it was so aggravating because of the how the “I know better than you” is everywhere nowadays in tech. The discord server was a reading group, and I was searching for discussion regarding a recent book they’d studied, by someone named “Copi”. At first, I didn’t use quotation marks, and I found my results were swamped with messages that included the word “copy”. At this point I was fairly chill and just added quotation marks to my query to emphasise that it definitely was “Copi” I wanted. I still was swamped with messages with “copy”, and it drove me mad because there is literally no way to say “fucking use the terms I give you and not the ones you think I want”. The software example you give is a great example of when it would be real great to be able to have this ability.

Yeah, it’s the consistency of it that’s so impressive.

Proton is so good that even when a game has a native Linux version, I often opt for the Proton version (so my games are all in one place). I was even able to install mods for games like Baldur’s Gate 3 (albeit with a bit of tinkering)

The only thing that I would miss is contactless payments via my phone.
