Juan Atkins, a Detroit-born producer and label founder widely regarded as one of techno’s originators, has died at the age of 64. His death was confirmed by management on November 1, 2026, following reports that he was found unresponsive in a Mexico City hotel ahead of a scheduled performance. Alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, Atkins helped establish the sound and philosophy of Detroit techno. Through projects including Cybotron and Model 500, as well as his Metroplex record label, Atkins shaped a genre whose influence extended across generations. Key recordings include Cybotron’s “Clear” (1983) and Model 500’s “No UFO’s” (1985). His 1988 track “Techno Music” appeared on the compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, helping establish the name by which the emerging movement became internationally recognized. https://www.synthtopia.com/content/2026/11/02/detroit-techno-pioneer-electronic-music-visionary-juan-atkins-has-died-at-the-age-of-64/
