A big politician whose been in office for 50 years just keeps accumulating more and more donors. Like the wealthiest in capitalism keep accumulating more and more capital.
Then they can play matchmaker and back someone they like in a primary and candidates who voters identity with can’t compete because it’s a primary.
The established candidates pick people that agree with them, and since they’re in there 70s-90s, their views are often outdated.
The result is holding the party in the past, and makes it more expensive to get those votes. Which makes money more important, and just starts the cycle again.
I understand that Dems can’t get money out of the general, but the only reason we can’t get it out of primaries, is the people who decide like the money and lifestyle of our current system.
