Sincere question — why is a cO2 pipeline a bad thing? It’s not like it can spill cO2 into the water table like oil, or explode like natural gas. Is there a risk of mass suffocation due to a leak or something?

In the article it states that a pipeline did explode releasing more than 30k barrels worth of liquid CO2 that quickly turned to gas. Since the gas is heavier than air it hung out in a huge cloud ground level. People fainted from lack of oxygen, cars stopped since their combustion engines need oxygen for combustion, and many are still living with health issues from it.

Not only that, but if any water gets into the pipeline it quickly turns to carbonic acid that can quickly dissolve thru steel.

Leaks can cause CO2 to settle in low areas and kill people. But also, if the leak gets into the ground water, it may acidify it causing other issues.
